My boyfriend and I are leaving for St. Thomas one week from today, staying at Pineapple Villas, we were wondering if it was a good idea to get a care rental or if taxi's are a better option?

We will be there for a week, we thought maybe we should at least rent one for a few days, so we could take it on the ferry over to ST. John and drive there. Does anyone have any info, on the best places to rent a car, and if they let you take it on the ferry?

If you're staying for a week.......Rent a car.

Taxis are very expensive.

We rent from the airport (Avis, Hertz).

AAA (or Entertainment Book) rates from Avis on a compact are about $200./week

I agree, rent a car. We have settled on renting from Dependable Car Rental every year. First of all they have always treated us wonderfully and secondly it is a family run operation and I'd rather support the little guy when at all possible. A word of note: Jeeps are easier to get on and off the car ferries but not required.

Do you think a family of 5: two parents and three children (24, 21, 15 yrs.) would fit in a jeep? I'm not sure what to do when we go to St. John for a day. We'll be renting a mini van for the week in St. Thomas. Should we just use that on the car barge or rent a jeep for the day in St. John? Thanks.

Hi Kathleen,

Check with your car rental agency and make sure that they will allow you to take your rental car over to St. John on the ferry -- not all of them do.

Assuming that you can take your rental over to St. John on the barge, it is probably easier to do so as parking near the docks in Red Hook can a real problem with all of the construction work going on right now.

Have a great trip :)!

Shar,
A few years ago we stayed at Pineapple Villa's and rented a car and it was not to much trouble getting anywhere. We are going back next Feb. (2007) and are staying at Pineapple Villa's again, When you get back will you e-mail me on the conditions since the hotel next door closed down and some people have said that it needs some upkeep. I'm worried because we are going with several other couples and several teenagers and I want everyone to enjoy themselves. Thanks.

Hi Kathleen,
I recently checked and was told that a Jeep is a 4 passenger vehicle -- no seatbelt available in the center of the rear seat (I couldn't remember as it hasn't been relevant in the past). I LOVE driving around on St. John with the top off of the Jeep! Fantastic views and fresh air -- it's the best! We solved our 5-people-problem by renting two Jeeps instead of one, but it doesn't sound like that will work for your family. We wanted Jeeps because we only drive on St. John and the tight curves can be a little slippery when it rains. No matter what you drive over from St. Thomas you will have a faboulous time. No worries...

Robbin,

I will let you know what I think of it, I have heard that the hotel next store has been sold and is to be open next year, so I imagine they are getting it in a better condition. We leave in a 4 days, I will let you know how it is when we get back.
