Need a little advice...we are going to St. John for the first time in a few days and have rented a villa in the Cruz Bay area. Should we rent a car or rely on the taxi? Thanks so much as we are virgins to the Virgin Islands!
ask your villa's manager some questions:
* how far a walk to downtown?
* is any portion of it uphill or downhill?
* what is the condition of the road and is it a safe road for walking (does it have a shoulder, is it paved well, etc.)?
* how is the environment (unfortunately we have to consider these things!) - are there untoward types about?
* is parking readily available?
if the villa is well situated, you may wish to consider engaging taxi drivers for your trans needs. be sure to ask about provisioning so that you can lay in groceries and drinks before you arrive - no need to leave unless you want to!
If you don't rent a car, you are really limiting your options to see this beautiful island unless you want to rely on taxis- the expense will probably end up being more than a car rental for a day or two plus you'll be on the clock with the taxi driver waiting for you or standing on the road waiting for the next taxi shuttle to come by to pick you up. We rent from Conrad Suttons and have been able to rent by the day at times for about $55 a day.
Thank you so much for all of the advice. We tried to secure a car on St. John to no avail and had to settle for renting out of St. Thomas. Now we hope to make it to the barge on time! I hope it's not too difficult to drive on the left side of the road! Everyone in my neighborhood is glad I'm not practicing here! Thanks again!!!
