How hard? Not at all. Taxis are EVERYWHERE! They sit at all the hotels, drive down Main Street yelling for fares, will stop to ask anyone anywhere even NEAR the road if they need a ride, and you can always call one of the many taxi companies (or gypsies) 24/7 and someone will come. They will take you just about anywhere you need to go (some places they won't go because they don't think they will get a fare back, or if the road is too bumpy, etc.). However, renting a car will, for most people, save lots of money. The taxi rates just took a $1 jump, so, since they charge per person, per destination, renting a car seems to make a lot more sense. A few months ago I called all of the rental agencies listed in the book and I posted their rates and whether they allow you to take the ferry to STJ or not on this site. Try searching for "rental" and "Marty on STT".

But, I would recommend, instead of using any of the rentals in the phone book (www.viphonebook.com), book on-line with Budget at www.budget.com for $178.99 per week. That's a whole lot less than you might spend on taxis for two people, and less than any of the companies charge if you are already here.. Ex.- Airport to Sapphire, for 2,(with no extra bags) = $24. Then go to Red Hook for dinner and drinks = $8. Then go back to your hotel at Sapphire = $8. Next day, go to Charlotte Amalie for shopping = $24. Then back to hotel = $24. Then to Red Hook for Dinner = $8. And back = $8. At the end of your first full day on island, you've already spent $104 on taxis. See how it can add up? Go ahead and rent a car. Driving on the left is no big deal, and you can't get lost...it's an island! Keep going! You'll eventually end up where you started! haha! Seriously, though, the island is very easy to navigate, and they give you a map with the car. Besides, the island is only 3 X 13 miles! Have fun!!
