Hello,

My wife and I will be staying at a cottage on St. John during the week of June 27 through July 4, 2005. What would be the best way to rent a car; Rent a car at the airport on St. Thomas or take a Taxi to the ferry to St John and rent the car on St. John?

Thanks,

Tim Cronin

It is cheaper to rent the car on STT and cross on the ferry. Make sure your agency allows off island use and be prepared to 'go it alone' if you have trouble on STJ as they will probably not provide service 'off island'.
If you want to visit Lamshure Bays (South Side) or want additional feel/control on damp roads after rain, rent a 4WD.
One advantage to renting on STJ is the agency will usually allow you to park in their lot (if they have one) while visiting Cruz Bay. If you do not intend to spend much time in Cruz, probably not worth the extra money. The other advantage is they are local if something happens.

One other note:

Budget has much better rates if you book them on-line at www.budget.com. Put in the airport code for here (STT) and a week will only be:

159.99 USD
per rental ECONOMY 4-DOOR

163.99 USD
per rental COMPACT 4-DOOR

173.99 USD
per rental MID-SIZE

185.99 USD
per rental FULL-SIZE

And that is per week. That's dirt cheap here.
