I will be flying into St. Thomas and staying on St John for a week. Am I better off renting a car in St. Thomas and or in St John? Wondering if renting on St. John would be less expensive. I have been quoted approximately $1100 for the week for a 7-passenger minivan. Any issues in getting around St John in a minivan?

I know there are those you do rent minivans but we always rent a 4WD Jeep and find that the roads on STJ require 4WD. Many of the driveways to villas are not doable with out 4WD. So I guess it depends on where you are staying and where you intend to go. We always rent on STJ rather than STT. I think the rates are cheaper on STT but you have to add in the cost of the car ferry over and back plus the potential problems that you might have if there is a problem with you vehicle. Many agencies on STT won't come over to STJ to help you out and there are also some agencies on STT that won't allow their vehicles to go over the STT.

It boils down to person preference but if this is your first time to STJ, I'd recommend renting on STJ rather than STT. That's my 2 cents.

We rent from Budget at the airport on STT and take the van over to STJ. Even with the cost of the ferry factored in, it is much cheaper to rent on STT. We will be going in December for 8 days and the quoted cost from Budget was $535.
