We would like to rent a 5-7 passenger vehicle on St. John for a week in March. Any suggestions/recent experiences?
We would prefer to rent on St J rather than bring vehicle over from St Thomas. Thanks for any help here.

Not sure if this will help, but I'll go ahead anyway. We rented a Jeep Commander from Dependable at the STT airport. It had the 3rd row seating and can easily accommodate 5-7 people. It would save you the $20 per person taxi fare to Redhook, but if you do need to flip that 3rd seat everyone might need to carry their luggage on their laps, pack wisely!
I have no experience with the car rental companies on STJ. If it is not a group from the same family, you may want to rent 2 seperate cars anyway. I always like to have my own space even if I am traveling with friends.

I have just spent 2 days working on our upcoming trip to STJ in March 09. This is our second trip. After getting a number of price quotes on car rentals, we have decided to go with Courtesy Car on STJ. They were the best price on St. John.
I was going to rent in STT and take the barge, but we have a 7:45 am flight back and we would never have made it to airport on time if we tried to get back from STJ the morning of our flight.
I have to admit, I was VERY tempted to rent from Hertz and just not tell them I was taking the car to STJ. Then I read on here [and on tripadvisor too] about the ferry not taking the cars, reporting the cars to Hertz and the possibility of getting $1000 fine!! Not worth the hassle. I got quotes from Thrify,
Courtesy was nice and easy to deal with on the phone, I hope continues when we pick up car. We rented for 10 days and got a price of $586 total for a Vitara.
Hope this helps,
debi
You cannot rent from Hertz and take it to STJ. IF the ferry lets you on (which is a big if), they will call Hertz and tell them they let you on, and they will charge your visa. We rented from Paris on St. John, which is somehow affiliated with Hertz, and they had signs everywhere and it says it all over their forms.
I think only a few rental places on STJ have vehicles bigger than a Jeep Liberty (which is cozy with five, let me tell you). There is a list of the rental companies around here somewhere (let me see if I can find it and bump it for you). I suggest you start calling now until you find one with a bigger vehicle. When you do, go ahead and book it because it's still high season and finding a car will be challenging for that time.
I don't think that Paris has bigger vehicles (although they might, give them a call) but they are great to work with aside from their no sand in the vehicle policy. That was a challenge. I've also worked with St. John Car Rental, but I do believe they only have libertys and wranglers, which doesn't help you.
Here is the list I think Lulu was referring to:
