I rented a SUV in STT and I was wondering if I should pay for insurance?
I just called my insurance about renting a car in St John this May. At first they thought I was covered, but then after digging on their part-it doesn't cover the USVI's. I have a major insurance company so you might want to check your own policy first. Luckily, we have a major credit card that covers insurance on rentals.
Just be sure of the coverage you are relying upon - credit card coverage is usually secondary insurance for damage and perhaps reimbursement to the rental company for the time the vehicle may be out of service but does not cover much, if any, liability.
If you have an American Express Card, they have an option where you can pay $25 and you have premium car rental insurance coverage - not secondary - and it covers your rental for up to 42days (there's info on the website). You just have to sign up for the coverage before you go and use your AmEx to pay for the rental.
Not to be argumentative here but the Amex premium policy covers mostly theft and damage to the rental car, with some coverage for accidental death/dismemberment and a bit of extra medical coverage for the DRIVER and PASSENGER. It can be used as primary coverage for theft or damage to the rental vehicle BUT there is no liability coverage to cover you in an accident you cause - no coverage for medical for the person in the other vehicle or coverage for repairing their vehicle, nor is their any coverage for hitting and damaging someone/something with the rental vehicle or extensive medical for your passenger.
I'm not saying that these cc coverage plans are bad; they are a great idea when coupled with some solid liability insurance. Without liability insurance you are assuming a lot of personal financial risk.
good to know. I'll have to look into it further. Thanks.
