We would like to use our rented car to explore BVI and USVI islands from our home base of St. John. Are there car ferries to the other islands, other than St. Thomas?
No. The only car barge operations is between St Thomas and St John. You can go on the passenger ferry to the BVIs but will have to rent a car there if you want to drive around yourself. See top right "ferry schedules" for a full list of inter-island ferry schedules and rates. Remember that to travel between the USVI and the BVI you must have passports.
For a trip to the BVI I would strongly suggest my favorite place on Earth (I've been around a bit) the Baths on Virgin Gorda.
If you rent your vehicle on St John you can NOT take it on the car ferry to St Thomas - no St John companies allow their vehicles off the island

If you rent a car on St. Thomas, make sure it's allowed to go to St. John. Hertz doesn't allow this.
