Can anyone give me specific information? Do I need a reservation? Is it difficult to do? Avis says we can take the car to STJ and we will stay on the road! We will be there in late January. Anna

Simple, about 48 bucks round trip. Drive to the Red Hook Ferry Dock and drive straight up to the booth, you drive on, pay drive off on St John.

For up to date ferry schedules including the car barges, go to the top of this page and click on "ferry schedules" for times and prices. Enjoy your visit!

Anna, It's a piece of cake. Just don't get flustered by the occasional appearance of disorganisation. Get in line, if there is one, get on and get off. You may have to back on on one or both ends but they have people guiding you. No problem. Make sure you check with the barge company as to restrictions on return. If you buy round trip some say you must use same company on return. Sounds like that should be the case but last time I used a different company on way back with no problem. Just check in plenty of time so you don't miss the last ferry back. I think it would be best to plan on using the same one but if you get to the dock and the other ferry is there, why wait if you don't have to.

bobcside: Forgot about that two-way ticket one-way ticket caveat and thanks for pointing it out. I understand from friends who regularly travel between STT and STJ on the car barge that they purchase one-way tickets rather than round trip because they can sometimes be held up on STT doing business and, though it costs a little bit more one-way, they can sometimes save time by taking the next ferry available rather than waiting for the one they booked a return trip on.

But these are business people and are on a different schedule than vacationers in general. Cheers!

STT, Your welcome. When I pulled up to the old Ferry Dock, (STJ) I asked the guy tending the lot which ferry was which. He said it didn't matter round trip ticket or not. So on we went. When the girl came around collecting she seemed surprised when I told her what the guy said and a second later stated, No Problem,No Problem, and off we went. I must say I have always found the local folks who work these Islands to be very accommodating and understanding provided your not an ass about tings. It's all GOOD.....
