*Hello!! Frantically planning our first trip to St John....plan to arrive on 7/6. Was thinking about renting the car at St Thomas airport and then taking the car barge to St John so I would only have to move luggage once, not lug it on the ferry, etc. Any insight or tips anyone would like to share??? Appreciate any and all help and info!! THANK YOU!!
I think the barge is a good choice. It allows you to shop for food on STT (although Starfish Market on STJ has a good selection). I think only Budget car rental lets you take vehicles to STJ. Book online with budget, its cheaper. Don't rent a little car. You'll need some power for the hills on STJ. There are two or three barge companies that don't always accept each others round trip tickets, so check their schedules and plan your return trip accordingly (or buy a one way ticket). The barge/rental car is cheaper than taxi/ferry if you have a big party.
On the other hand;....Renting on STJ helps support the local economy...The passenger ferry ride is better than sitting in a hot car next to a cement truck...You wont have to deal with the crazy traffic on STT...You can have an extra rum punch while waiting for your bags at the airport...I don't think you can rent a "safari" truck from STT (one of my favorite ways to see STJ)
I love STJ!! Enjoy it! I'll be coming 7/25. Take lots of pictures and leave some foot prints for me 🙂
