Hi. Just wondering if anyone can shed some light .....is it really important to reserve in advance your space in the car barge ferry from St. Thomas to St. John? I am looking at heading to St. John around 9 am in the morning during my vacation in two weeks. If I do not make a reservation on a weekday, is there a lot of rush hour traffic in the morning on the ferry from St. Thomas to St. John where the barge would be full? Also, should I make a reservation for weekend travel to St. John? Thanks!!

I thought the car ferry was first come, first served? Yes, there is rush hour car ferry use on weekdays, and heavier tourist use on weekends.

Well, let's see. Mister B is large and covers alot of vehicles. General II is out of service starting 21-22 March. Roanoke is running. So, it should be ok. No waiting.

Yeah, give them a call, the ferry boat operators could use a good chuckle. We've never had any real issues (life threatening) getting on and off but have found that a Jeep style vehicle is easier. We have however had some funny "car barge" stories to tell our friends.

I have never heard of reservations. The ferry schedules posted here do not mention them either. Just show up.

Actually, reservations are available online.. I saw it at the Love City Ferries' website. Hmm... I hope it is not a scam. 🙁

Yeah, good luck with that. And how will you get around the cars already lined up to get on the ferry?

It is really first come first serve. Not to worry, by 9AM the early contractor traffic should be gone. The food and liquor purveyors start showing up then. There should be plenty of room, barring that one of the four barges aren't down.

You can probably reserve a ticket on line but it's not going to save you a spot on any of the barges. Just get there a little early to make sure you can get on the barge at exactly 9am. I believe they run every half hour.

Good luck,

Justin

When I was on the islands 3 weeks ago me and my husband went to STJ 2 days in a row and did not have any problems getting on the barge at all. Coming home was a little more crowded with the workers coming home, but we didn't have to wait. One company cost more then the other though. Mister B was $50 and the other was $42 round trip.

Captain Vic is $42 and they are much more pleasant!

Anyone know if they sell a week long pass at a discount?

No week long passes at a discount that I'm aware of.
