I was on St. John 12 years ago and was in a hurry to see every thing as we were staying on Tortola. I will be back next summer for a longer stay and did not get a close up look at Caneel or Westin. Need some help on recomendation as to where to stay given this choice. I know Caneel comes highly recommended...but I have heard about other places like Estate Lindholm or some of the villas. Please all you St. John pros help me out. I will also be on St. Thomas..having to pick from Renaissance, Saphire, or Ritz...I think Ritz will win out but any thoughts on these three would be appreciated also. way2old

way2old,

I would definitely choose Caneel over the Westin. I have stayed at Caneel and my sister has stayed at the Westin...Caneel is by far the better choice, but also more expensive. If you are interested in villas/condos, check out Gallow's Point. They are great places in a great location. They are a very short walk to Cruz Bay yet are still private and peaceful. Hope this helps!

If you choose the hotel route, Caneel over the Westin any day. The Westin is nice, but it is a chain hotel and has that resort chain hotel feel. Caneel is a special place. I've been traveling to the islands for years. If you would like more privacy - I encourage you to check out some of the villas - there are many the are beautiful. You can arrange private chefs, maid service and anything else you may desire.

Meigan,
Thanks for the reply and information. We have narrowed it down to Caneel or Estate Lindholm...Any thoughts on Lindholm?

Have heard only good things about Lindholm and the hosts however for walking from your room into the water, 7 wonderful beaches on property and full resort services Caneel is your answer. The Ritz is no doubt the premier property on St. Thomas. Might want to check out the B&B option there. Sapphire has one of the nicer beaches on the island with great views, good snorkeling on site and the rooms are right on the beach. It is an older property but that doesn't detract since it has a had a face lift in the last couple of years. However it is very family friendly with kids staying and eating free so the family atmosphere may not suit but the beach is large enuf that you can find some privacy and quiet if there's loads of kids. The SeaGrape restaurant there is not so great for dining but Azure is located on the property if you want to dine in. The Ren is also out on East End. Many of the rooms are a distance from the beach so there can be lots of walking or they do have shuttles. Some don't like the beach saying it can get murky and seaweedy but it is a short walk from Coki Beach which is a popular one with lots of good snorkeling.
