Hello - Has anyone stayed at Caneel Bay in either the Courtside room or Ocean View? I'm trying to get the pro's and con's of each room, to help me decide which would be best for our honeymoon. Any suggestions would be great.
Thanks.

We stayed at Caneel 17 years ago. I understand there have been changes since then with the new owners so I can not provide 'current' review of the resort. I understand it is still an upper level facility (should be for the price) and takes care of all your needs. The grounds were meticulous and beaches were very nice. However, do not miss seeing the other beaches on the island (Hawksnest, Trunk, Cinammon, Mahoo, Francis, etc.) you can rent a jeep on site for convenience.
We stayed on what is now Cottage Point in room 56. I believe this is classified as 'Ocean View'. We appreciated having the windows open and hearing the ocean. The view was somewhat obstructed by trees, but certainly not enough to detract from the experience. This may have changed since 1987!
Several people we spoke to at the time stayed in the Coutside rooms as they were avid players and claimed they were more secluded. I can't see how they were more secluded than Cottage Point, especially if people are playing tennis, but that was their claim.
If it is your first time to the island and you are on your honeymoon, I suggest the ocean view. We loved the Cottage Point location. Make sure you are not in the 2 level units as they are not as secluded as you would want for a honeymoon.
Not to steer you away from Caneel and the conveniences they provide, but you might want to consider a 1 bedroom villa. You could probably get a very romantic location and still save money after eating out every night.
Have a great time in STJ and a wonderful life there after.

Tracy

We stayed at Caneel for our honeymoon last month and were thrilled with our choice. We stayed on Hawksnest Beach which was beachfront, but we would have been happy with an ocean view also. I would highly suggest oceanview over courtside, it is worth the extra money.

Email me if you have questions. Have a great time!

Tracy - I do not know if your heart is set on staying at Caneel, but we just got back from our honeymoon two weeks ago and we stayed in a private villa called the Temptress - I highly recommend it - beautiful villa with private pool and a spectacular view of St. Croix and St. Thomas - we were also within minutes of Cruz Bay, perfect location! Email me if you have any questions - Have fun on your trip!

I would recommend the rooms on Cottage Point for your honeymoon (ocean view room). It is true that there are trees, but you can still see the ocean. (Note that there are trees in front of both the ocean front and ocean view rooms--the difference is that you can walk right on to the beach if you upgrade to ocean front) The rooms on Cottage Point have tall dividers between the balconies, so there is more privacy than the balconies on the Hawksnest rooms. It's about a three-five minute walk from Cottage Point to Paradise and Scott Beach. If you go to the Caneel website you can download a map of the property--all of the rooms are numbered on the map. When you make your reservation, request the room numbers in the area you like best. It is not guaranteed that you'll get the exact room you ask for, of course, but we did end up where we wanted to be when we were there in July.
