Hi We're going to this hotel in a couple of weeks but just saw some very disturbing news on TripAdvisor.com. Is it under construction? Are there bugs all over??? Or is this just a disgruntled person? I'm really worried! Can anyone give me the true info? Thanx!!

it's not the fanciest place around. Tropical islands tend to have bugs. Hotels and condos usually have Terminix spray a couple times a month to keep things under control, but there are some hotels who skip this "luxury".

If you booked the hotel to just have a cheap place to crash and plan to spend most of your time out and about exploring, you might be OK. If you want a nicer resort where you can hang out, this might not meet your expectations.

What dates are you planning to be there? What kind of rate did they give you? Some places are fully booked through the tourist season, but you might have other options within your price range where your experience might be a little less chancey.

Hi - No we weren't looking for cheap, just moderate, & we read very good things about this place - were we misled????????? I'm trying to reach the people there today - they haven't replied to emails lately but I'll phone this time. Just in case, what else is still available on a beach with calm warm waters with snorkelling?? Thanx alot!! Gayle

what's available depends on the dates you expect to be here. There are a few hotels with sandy beaches. Others are downtown without a beach right at the site. There are also some condos with (or without) beaches on site that may have space available.

All is well - I spoke to the manager on the phone just now. There's no construction - the person who wrote that message on TripAdvisor is not someone to listen to & I do believe the manager. Of course we'll see when we get there. I'll write again after our visit. Gayle

Just wanted to report back re Cane Bay Beach Club in St Croix. The mgr - Joe Scirto - & his staff are very nice. But the place really has gone downhill from the pics on their website - it's rundown & needs work, e.g., holes in screens, louvers that won't open, louvers that won't close, staining, crooked stairs etc etc etc.

The Cane Bay area has a special comraderie & a laidback feeling - like the Beat era almost. There's a poker game in the main building some nights & cars are everywhere - a strange scene.

The reef club is really right on top of a reef so the waves don't break calmly at nite - they crash continually. We got used to it, but not everyone would like that.

Also it's about 30 min on dark winding roads from Christiansted, where most of the interesting restaurants are. That can be tricky at nite. If we returned we'd want to be closer to that town. Funny tho, even there everything goes quiet & empty at nite & on weekends. Fredricksted is even moreso. The island really feels empty.

The island is safe. Everyone is pleasant & helpful. Anyway, it was an interesting experience, but we won't be back.

ps a "safety bar" (a 2x4 placed at the base of the sliding door to the porch) crashed down on my bare toe. It's still not totally back to normal (after almost a month) so if it wasn't broken, it's certainly badly bruised. Watch out!
