My family is moving to St. Croix in late November as my wife is going to be working at the hospital in Christainsted. We're really not sure which car we should ship there. We've got a 2008 Toyota Prius and a 1998 Volkswagen Passat. The Prius is obviously the better car, but we're wondering if we'd be able to get work done on it should something go wrong. Anyone know?

I suggest you post this on the Relocation Message Board (link located under the Colors of Paradise ad) if not already done.

Although the advice to post this on the other forum is solid, I don't post there and would simply remark that getting a Toyota serviced here is a better bet than getting a VW serviced. There are Toyota dealerships here but no VW dealerships at least to the best of my knowledge.

The "old" Beetles have a dedicated following here but once VW started having the cars put together in Mexico their manufacturing integrity suffered. The major problem here was and is rust. I owned two VWs here. Granted several years ago but with both (stupidly I thought the first set of problems were just a fluke!) I had window problems where rust simply resulted in the window mechanism in the door panel failing. That was followed by "undercarriage" problems caused by rust corrosion and electrical problems likewise.

Everyone I know who has a VW here has had similar and worse problems and since there is no dealership here one has to both personally track down and order parts to be shipped from the mainland. Toyotas are a dime a dozen and finding both a mechanic and on-island parts is way easier. Hope that helps and now zip on over to the relocation forum for more thoughts on the subject!
