Heading down there in a few months. I'm hoping to bring a tent, rent a car, and sleep wherever. Is that generally accepted on St John? And how about St Thomas?
And do you think it would be safe?
Thanks everyone for the helpful info I have already found on here!

Good information on Water Island camping though, STT Resident.
The last post was a few hours ago and I responded to the question asked ...
Yes, I acknowledged that. Maybe there should have been a new thread started about camping on Water Island, because the link you supplied is very informative. jmo
As long as the thread subject is relevant it can always be added onto and the new post was right on the mark as the subject was, "camping .... wherever".

don't know about Mr. Clever, but I moved down here from Oregon, and YES you can pretty much camp where ever, on the beach, in the woods, or over on the east side in the desert, so I think it was a fair question. don't know where you live, sorry if they don' t let you camp. I for one do not like upscale camping might as well stay at a hotel.
Jeraldine, Were you speaking of St John when you wrote "YES you can pretty much camp where ever, on the beach, in the woods, or over on the east side in the desert"?
No, you cannot camp wherever you like. Period.
Do so at your own risk and the risk of arrest by Park Rangers, DPNR, as well as the Police.
Cinnamon Bay has camp sites for rent that have bare sites that you can bring your own equipment or they have sites that have tents and bedding, picnic tables and there are showers, bathrooms and trash receptacles on the property.
Please do not camp "wherever" and leave your trash and your crap, behind.
Contact the National Park in STJ or DPNR in STT/STX to find where camping is allowed. There's a link for Water Island above.

She was talking about where she lives now. "In the woods, or over on the east side in the desert" is a pretty good give-away!
