I am interested in what people use for calling back to US if a cellphone is not available? Are there good calling cards that can be purchased on STT and about how much do they run?

I bought a calling card at Wal-Mart before I left home....then just used it in our room to call home (Wisconsin). I don't have long distance service back at home, so I left the kids a calling card to call me on St. Thomas too.
My daughter used her cell-phone a couple times to call me in St. Thomas, & she was charged fees for that.
Remember if you use a calling card from a pay phone tho, it takes alot of min. off right away. But any telephones in your rooms are not pay phones. I know in some hotels, they could charge you a sur-charge...like maybe $.50.

And there are tonsof places that sell phone cards here in STT. Anywhere from $5 to $20, I believe. Just buy the amount that you want to use. But, if you have a cell phone, most of them from the States will work here. Just roaming charges.

good day. just read your post bout calling the mainland while on island. some cell phones do just fine here. have been on island over a year and have had no problem with my sprint phone. but one note, if using sprint, must set your phone to pcs mode only or you will have roaming charges. have heard cingular is also here, but no info on that. enjoy your visit. kathy

My wife is on Cingular and had no problems making calls (a couple of "dead" spots on island but not bad) we made calls back to Northwest Indiana, Arizona, Illinoise with no roaming charges...as long as your on Cingular's nation wide long distance plan. What's nice if someone from back home needs to contact you they have no long distance charges either.

We have A T & T and to our surprise we weren't charged any fees for all the calls we made. Of course, with our plan we get free minutes after 9:00PM and STT is one hour ahead so we were actually calling home at 8:00. Our son was still awake and we were able to talk to him everyday. Quite frequently our calls got cut off. You have to find a good spot to stand in in your hotel room and stay there the whole time you talk.

I use onesuite.com they have long distance for 2.5 cents a minute. You can add minutes whenever you want online. Sorry if I am breaking the rules by posting this but I thought it answered the question.
