We are going to St. John the first week in September and leaving the baby at home with his grandparents. Since this will be our first trip away I am a little nervous and wondering how I will be able to call home - do cell phones work on St. John or what type of calling card do I need to purchase? Shoud I buy a calling card before I leave or are they pretty easy to find on the Island.
Thanks.
April:
I use Cingular (cell) on both St John & St Thomas with no problems. With my plan there are no roaming charges (I just use plan minutes or after 9 PM & weekends it's free)). I also have a MCI phone card (from COSTCO) that costs than 3 cents per minute. It works too.
Have a great trip!

We had limited success in STJ with T-Mobile around Cruz Bay. You need to make sure your phone can use the analog signal as I do not believe a digital signal is avaialble to all services.
Seeing as this is your first significant 'separation', I would get a calling card and do it the old fashioned way.
i have the same worry about my elderly mom.....however her phone AT HOME in the states has unlimited national long distance(most carriers have it) WHICH INCLUDES USVI AND PR....so we are having mom CALL US at our hotel at night so that it is free and we don't have to use the cell phone unless we have to...
