What is the best/cheapest way to call home to the mainland? We have US Cellular for cell phone service and I was told I will have "raoming rates" in St T. Are calling cards the way to go? Thanks~

Just kidding! The calling cards are good. You can save lots using them. Too bad your cell phone company doesn't have free long distance or a nationwide pan.

I have Cingular and have always use my cell phone when I am in the VI because the VI is in Cingular's Nation wide plan without any roaming charges. As long as you have minutes you can talk till the cows come home.

That's correct about Cingular. We bought the cheapest Cingular phone we could and load minutes on a pay as you go plan to use in the USVI. Their coverage is very good and no extra cost.

Melissa....I have US Cellular too & the new plan that's out gives you 45min. of roaming a month now on the new plan. And we used our text messaging alot.
We will see what happens on our bill, we returned on the 9th of Dec. from the islands. We did get a calling card while there tho, & it worked just fine!

Roaming should be free. At least for a lot of US carriers it is free, even though you may think you are being charged.

We were on STJ 12/2 - 12/9, we have cingular, but stayed on the northshore this time around. When I got home and went to cingular to do an upgrade on my phone, I was told that my bill was $1,250.00+/- . Apparently I had bvi roaming charges. I explained that we were on STJ but must have been picking up a tower from Tortola or something?? They did end up reversing the charges, but it was a little unsettling while it was under "review".

I have Sprint. Anyone know about sprint coverage on St. John? From their map, it looks like they have coverage in Cruz Bay only.

So...we just got our USCellular bill & was charged $123 roaming charges! I called & told them that the sales clerk told me that I had 45min. on the new plan & I was told to go back to the store & get that sales clerk to call them & tell them he gave us the wrong information....basically he had to admit he told me wrong infromation! He wouldn't do it, but USCellular did credit me over 1/2 the bill for the roaming charges.

We were charged $3/day for using international towers too!

Use calling cards!!
