I just found out about this today while surfing the web. Is it worth a trip over from STT? Are the plants clearly identified? Are the paths mostly on flat ground? Thanks for any and all information.

Wow, that brought back some memories - had completely forgotten about it! Was there years ago. Here's one link:

I don't know that I'd make a special trip but if you're in Road Town it's definitely worth a visit.

The botanical gardens in RoadTown on Tortola are small compared to other island botanical gardens but an easy walk-thru with well marked plants. The entrance is a wonderul row of royal palms and there are some wonderful speciments of orchids. Not sure what would be blooming when you would be there since it does vary by season. I don't know that I even had it on my "to do" list , even tho I am an avid gardener, or even that it existed and we just found it wandering thru RoadTown. I'm not sure if it is "worth it" and it wouldn't be for me to take a day to ferry over to see it but for you, it might be just what you wanted. I wouldn't give up a beach day but then seldom do I and the only reason we weren't on the beach rather than in RoadTown was I was not happy with Tortola's beaches. DH tried to distract me from looking longingly at St. John, I guess!

Did you know that there are lovely gardens at St. Peter Great House Estate and Gardens right on St. Thomas? I believe it was a former sugar plantation and the house was built to resembe an old plantation house. if I remember the plants are also labeled there. The views are absolutely lovely from the deck and they do have local art in the museum. .

Thanks, everyone, for all the great information. On their website, they mention a rare turtle (red-legged?), which is something I've never seen at any other botanical garden.

Blu, the BVI botanical garden is on Tortola in Road Town.

LindaJ, I've been to the STX botanical garden (twice in fact!), and it is lovely. I'm looking forward to going back - I was on a tour, and it really didn't give us enough time to walk the entire garden.

ms411: That "turtle" is probably a South American red-footed tortoise. Ron on this forum has loads of them at his Villa Fairview and would probably let you hug one if you ask him nicely!

Thanks, STT Resident, that saves me a trip to Tortola! I'll try to contact RonUSVI at a later date. A friend of mine lives in the area, and I'm sure she'd love to see them, too. I find it fascinating that there are actually land turtles here. So many hidden gems in the VI.

I saw one on STT at one time. I have no idea where though. I plan to go there when my friend comes to visit, so I guess I better find out soon. Anyone know where it is, what the name of the place is, etc. ?
