My wife & I are visiting STT & STJ in April and I plan on buying a digital camera and camcorder while I am there since the prices are better there than on the mainland. I have found a particular camera I want and was wondering what the selection was like in the islands. Do I have a chance finding the same camera in STT? Does it take a while to get the new models in the stores there?

You should beable to find exactly what you are looking for at Royal Caribbean and Boolchand's. They are almost next door to each other on the main drag in Havensight. Good that they are so close so that you can play them off of each other to get the best deal. Remember, haggling is the name of the game. They are also downtown.

I found the camera I am looking for at http://www.boolchand.com/camcordigicams.php but the price is the exact same as it is here on the mainland. Is this their internet price and if you actually buy it in the store you get it cheaper? I have read on some web sites that the savings on electronics isn't all that great. Do you get a good deal there?

Although you can haggle for better prices in electronics as well, we found the 'great USVI savings' mainly applied to jewelry. Give it a try, what have you got to loose?

Just bought another little Canon Elph at Boolchand's. They had a price of $529 on it. I got it for 399. They threw in a few items worth well over $150 also! Saw the camera at Best Buy on Sunday for $399 plus tax and at Brandsmart for $379 plus tax. Just the camera, no case, no extra SD card,no nothing! Just see what they will do for you. It does work!

It doesn't apply just to jewelry (even tho the deals to be gotten on jewelry are great). The price on the websites are probably MSRP's, which is what you see in the States. I can haggle a deal on, say, a $1,000 video camera, down to around$6-$650...I'd say that's a significant savings, wouldn't you?

Is there anything I need to know before haggling with these people for a camera. Is it common for them to throw in extras and take a lot off the price?

Haggling has a certain *style* to it, but it's hard to describe. As an example, if it's $1K, the guy will ask you if you would like to take it with you now or pick it up later (alternate of choice closing tool done in lots of sales. He's not asking you *if* you want it, but gives you a choice of *how* you want it and then assumes the sale). Your answer should be something like "I just got an offer from the guy at _______ for $300less than that! Sheesh! Guess what I heard was wrong." And then start to turn away. He'll stop you and ask what you heard. You tell him that you heard that ______was the BEST place to buy XXXX, cuz you get more for your money in their store. I guess I heard wrong. Then turn to walk a way and he will call you back in. If he doesn't, he ain't going any lower! But he usually will be willing to, sohe willcall you back in. When you think you've got him down as far as he will go. Then say you are going to get a drink and "think about it". Sales people HATE to hear that! He'll then offer you a drink. Him and haw around and see if you can get it any lower by counter offering. If he still doesn't budge, say you are going for lunch to think about it and walkout. If he lets you go, he's done. Go to another store that sells the same thing and tell them that so and so just offered it to you for $XXX, can he beat it? If he can, start all over again and get him as low as you can. Then go back to the other guy with what this guy said he could do it for. Can he beat it? If not, go to the second store. If so...buy it!!

Hello Ryan,

Know what you can get it for from the camera stores around you, also look online for prices. This way you have something to compare the price & offer given when shopping in STT to. It is common for the camera guys to throw in a couple accessories (camera bag...).

The profit margin on digital cameras and camcorders is not very much. That's why there is not great big difference in prices from a store on STT and a mail order catalog store in New York. Listen to what Ronnie is saying. They will give you the best deal (and still make a small profit) but the extras that they will throw in and the savings on duty make it well worth your while to shop and buy while on STT. I have done it a few times myself, and I got great deals!
