I saw a notice of a Butterfly Farm now on STT at Havensight Mall -- supposedly there since last June '07. Anyone been there? They say they have the same attraction on St. Martin, Aruba and G. Cayman where they have been pretty popular. Was wondering if if's a seasonal thing and would they have anything worth a visit in October?

My friend Val worked at the Butterfly Farm and we gave her grief about it for months. Seriously? A BUTTERFLY farm? Then I went. And it was one of the cooler things I've done down here. 25 different kinds of butterflies from all over the world. They are so beautiful and the garden is lovely as well. And the place is owned by a family of really kind people to boot. I can't recommend the place enough. Not only will you enjoy it immensely and learn a lot, but you'll be helping the local economy and some nice folks. You are right, it's in the Havensight area. Just walk down along the cruise ships and you'll see a white non-descript building on your left. Enjoy it, we did!!!

If you have been to St. Martin it is not as good as the one there. But it is a different trip if you have never been there. They had only about 25 butterflys when were were there. They could stand to get a bunch more.

Hi Lo-

Today was my first day on the job at the Butterfly Farm as a tour guide, and it is a really great place run by committed, caring, and cool folks. Come on down and say hello!

Much love, Heather

When I visited the Butterfly Farm last year, my ticket was good for the day. If I had known that before I went, I would have gone early in the morning, and then gone back later in the afternoon. I think the guide said you're more likely to see butterflies hatching early in the morning, or seeing the ones newly born released, and later in the day you'll see more flying around. Heather, is that the case?

And, Heather, do you have Gulf Fritillery (sp?) butterflies?

Guess I need to go back for a refresher!

We saw the sign for the Butterfly Farm when were there in May. Is the actual farm at Havensight? or is that just an office to buy tickets?

Hi MS-

To answer your question, the best time to see butterflies hatching is first thing in the morning. It takes a while for them to hatch from the chrystalis, then they have to hang upside down and let their wings dry out for about two hours, then they are ready to go live their little two-week lives! They do continue to hatch through the day, but not nearly as many.

Also, yes, there are fritillery butterflies at the farm. Not sure if they are the species you asked about . . . there are over 170,000 species of butterflies!

Please stop by and say hello!

Much love, Heather

I stopped by there late this afternoon and was impressed by the enthusiasm of the owners and had a nice conversation with them - I want to take my next island visitors there for sure. Their website --- butterflyfarm.com is worth a visit too.

Ditto on it being worth a visit. The tour guides are friendly and very informational - a definite big plus to the experience. Its well maintained, variety of plants/flowers and of course beautiful butterflies. The Blue Morpho butterfly - gorgeous! (tu)

Hi,

We have gone a number of times since they opened in 2007. They provide discount to local residents and have seen some incredible BFs/moths. It does depend on time of year and time of day. We have visited many BF farms in the world and this one is precious even if it is small. Be sure to get the owner to do your talk - he is a biologist and provides a wealth of knowledge as he guides you through.
