Has anyone else looked into this site? www.myparadisebusiness.com I mean, you might be able to own your own business on St. John for 100 bucks? I asked a friend, and he said it's not open to Virgin Islanders =( only Stateside peeps. I've been in the store many times, it's a real business, and it does connect to the Mixology Warehouse site. Neat idea!
This is the 2nd (maybe 3rd) year they have done this - I guess they don't get the MINIMUM 8,000 entries (therefore an $800,000 "sale" for the owner) that they require 🙂

Hummm. Wonder what they're doing with all those $100 bills in the meantime?
I saw this and it looked "fishy". Maybe I am not seeing the big picture, but this is the 2nd time they have run this "contest" and still no winner. Also, it appears to me that the owner is the judge of who gets the business or am I mistaken? I just see a lot of ways that this could end up in court.
Here's what the website says about judges.
"There will be three judges who will determine the winning essay based upon the foregoing criteria with a fourth judge to be utilized only in the case where there is a tie. The judges shall have at least a degree from an accredited American university. Judges shall not know the identity of authors when judging letter content. Judges shall not know the identity of each other during judging process until the final essay is to be judged as winner.
Check out the website. The idea is interesting and appears to be legit from what I've read. It would certainly be a good deal for both the owner and the winner. However, I'm not too sure there are 8,000 people willing to write a $100 check to enter.
As I recall, the owner has operated several businesses on STJ, including Noah's Little Arks. He says he just wants to fix up his boat with the proceeds and get on the water again. I've read a lot of positive comments about Mixology on various STJ forums, so I wish him the best of luck.
How can three judges' vote end in a tie?
Linda,
It sounds to me like each of the three judges gets to pick his/her favorite essay. If two or all three of the judges pick the same essay as their favorite then you have a clear winner. If three different essays are picked by each of the judges then the forth judge is called in to choose from among the three.
That's my guess, anyway.
