Hull Bay Hideaway, IMO.

Too bad Burger King is not still on the island - in the late 80s they sold Coors 🙂

the best burgers are at Shipwreck on Fridays. Almost half price. So you can't beat it. 3/4 of a pound with fries. Then add a beer. It is the right way to start a week end.

Yes, Shipwreck does have wonderful burgers - even a turkey burgers are great, too.
And top that off with a beer, yummmy.........
Seems like everytime I get down there(STT), that's is where I wind up after I land.
Thanks about Friday night discount. Have to keep this in mind.

Fat Turtle has a great appetizer platter that includes a couple of mini cheeseburgers. We love to stop by for drinks and snacks after shopping downtown. I'm sure that the full size version is just as good as the mini's.

Which island?

And Shipwreck Tavern St. Thomas, are they still automatically adding on the gratuity even for one person?

On St. Croix, Cheeseburger in Paradise
On St. John, Shipwreck Tavern or Skinny Legs
On St. Thomas, Tickles Dockside Pub

Make your own and be inventive while you're on vacation. I know, I know, you don't want to COOK here but if you're staying somewhere where you have cooking facilities and a view, pick up some 80% ground round, season it up and slap it onto the villa barbie or in the condo pan, serve it up on a good bread or roll with some local greens, canned or fresh pimientos, onions, cheese - awesome - and EVERYTHING tastes better when you're out on your porch watching the sunset. This from someone who owns a restaurant here - but no view and no burgers so no conflict there!

Anita is right about checking Shipwreck, though, about the added on gratuity which most visitors seem not to notice. There was a discussion a while ago on this forum about their policy and Paradise Point was also mentioned in the same vein. Oh, and Fungi's at Point Pleasant too. The norm here is NOT an included gratuity so caveat emptor! If these restaurants and any others who were pulling this nonsense have changed their policies or at least now indicate IN LARGE LETTERS ON THE MENU OR ELSEWHERE, I think we'd all like to know, locals and visitors alike. Cheers!

a davis

they add the gratuity MOST times. I hate that but that is their way of getting you. I know one of the servers there and she sometimes looks the other way adding the tip. So I always tip her more just to show her how I like the service.

But they are good and they start the week end off right. But 3/4 pound is almost too much and it even hurts me sometimes to finish it. But I go back.

but billd, is that policy clearly indicated for the benefit of everyone whether they be visitors or locals? I had a problem with it when the issue was first raised and I still have a problem with it unless it's clearly and boldly written either on the menu itself or itemized on the guest cheque.

When you're in the hospitality business here, prices and add-ons need to be spelled out. Hotels, resorts, B&B's and everyone else operating in that genre usually make it clear that the price per person is just that but an additional 8% hotel tax (government-mandated and which goes to the Tourism Fund) will be added on over and above. Some have additional energy costs tacked on too to compensate for those who, despite every well-intentioned admonitions, leave the A/C running for a day while they're out on the beach or taking a sailing trip or whatever.

Restaurants and bars here in the past NEVER added on a gratuity except, sometimes for parties of 6-8 or more (and that was spelled out) until the last two years or so when a few places decided to buck the trend and put in VERY small letters on the menu that a gratuity would be added to the bill whether you had a couple of beers or a full dinner.

As a restaurant owner myself I got caught one night myself unbewares. Granted I'm not known everywhere I venture out to but this happened to be at a place where the staff all knew me as a local restaurateur. The food and the service were OK but nothing spectacular. The bill came, my companion paid with a credit card and I chipped in my share along with a more than 20% gratuity but the total of the bill continued to nag at me for a while afterwards. I finally figured out that as generous as I was, the bill already included a gratuity. No doubt the server was tickled pink but in retrospect I was ticked off. Being in the business I tip very well and above the norm when I go out for dinner because I know the servers work hard for their money but ... I won't make that mistake again and will carefully check the tally.

Locals and visitors should be treated alike where tipping is concerned. I have a problem when a tip is included on the bill other than for a large party and when it's not clearly indicated (especially, I might add, for an oldster such as myself who has a problem reading miniscule print even WITH reading glasses!) Some restaurant owners who deal with visiting Europeans who are unfamiliar with US tipping practices might use that as an excuse but honestly I don't buy it. You win some and you lose some and that's the way it goes.

Apologies if necessary for rambling on - Anita, dear heart, it's all your fault! Cheers!

LOL!!! *who tol' me say dat*, as Paul Keens Douglas would say...

I'm sorry everyone, it's a pet peeve of mine. A tip is to be given freely by the customer, not wrested out of the purse or pocket.

Putting on the tip automatically, for every table, removes the incentive for the real go-getters, and attracts those who are happy to deliver ho-hum attention in exchange for a little something extra, which they don't earn.

I can see adding it for large parties, because of all the work involved. But for little old me? You'll get your tip, but it's mine to give, it cannot be automatic. Raise your rates and the staff salaries, and I will tip on top of that because I believe in tipping. So it's not about the $, it's the ruination of the whole principle. They certainly won't miss me, so no big whoop here. I just don't appreciate it, and so I don't eat there any more.

Oh my goodness!!
i had never really looked at the bill that closely to notice that they were adding gratuities and then I give more...WOW!!!
I always said that I had 'Sucker" written cross my forehead -
I knew in the past from time to time, it has happened - not necessary all in STT - about some establishment adding the gratuities with the bill, but it is one of those things that you forget to check -
Thank you so much A. Davis and STT Resident.
I have to re-think my burger options here....
i agree that it is the principle of the thing, you know....
So what other establishment (s)does this?
On STT? How about STJ and STX? (Just curious)
