I have finally decided to rent a car for our stay in Sept. Does anyone have any feedback or preferences among rental agencies and picking up the rental from the airport versus Dependable coming and picking us up and dropping us back there? I am getting the same cost of $47 per day for a compact on all three agencies (well Budget is a bit more for some random reason).
Any thoughts? Is this a good daily rate for STT? (we are there for less than a week so a weekly rate doesnt apply)
Thanks!

It's not that I advise against the ferry.....but that (IMHO) it's a lot of "trouble" for just a day's trip to STJ.

First, you wait in line at Red Hook, then compete for space aboard the ferry....if you miss that ferry you wait for the next one (1 hour).

Returning, you wait for the ferry, you compete for a space, if you miss it you wait for the next one...hopefully it wasn't the last car ferry of the day. If it was your car stays on STJ until the next day.

Since we go over to STJ for the day...to the beaches...it's easier (IMHO) and less (precious) time consuming to just pay for the taxi ride to the beach(s).

If you're staying on STJ then, by all means, take the car over.

Did you have to reserve a space on the car ferry going over to St. John? Where is Sapphire as we have a car reserved with Budget but not sure if it is at the airport, I will check? I am a little nervous about the car ferry have heard horro stories.

No reserved car spaces aboard the ferry....at least when we did it....it was everyone for themselves.

Sapphire Beach is on the East End of STT....about 30 minutes from the airport.

Budget has offices at the airport and at Sapphire Beach.

We had no problem w/car ferry & it was a prime week before Xmas. No competing for a spot. We got there & within a few minutes a ferry came & everyone patiently backed onto the ferry. We made 3 trips that week back & forth, no problem. I would not like to go in a taxi because I want to go to the smaller beaches without the crowds. Taxis don't wait at those beaches. If you just want to go to Trunk or Cinnamon than a taxi would be better.
