I've had great luck with Avis, rented from them several times however, this time I'm going with Dependable or Discount. Their prices are lower than Avis and they both have decent reputations.

We've rented from Budget 6 times. Twice we got a brand new Taurus. Once we rented a Jeep and it was not new, but in great shape. Once we rented a mini-van from the Havensight location and it was brand new. The other 2 times, we rented compact cars and they were trashed.

We're coming down again in February and I was set to rent from a different company. We, too, need a 7 passenger 4 wheel drive that we can take to STJ. We're renting from Budget again because there was a significant price difference for the 8 day rental compared to Discount and Dependable. Both Discount and Dependable are options for you - they have good feedback from this board. We're just saving the money, and taking our chances with Budget (but - we've overall had success with Budget).

Depending on the time you arrive and your patience level, you can probably inspect your car and work to get a different one if it's unacceptable.

We rented from Dependable and they picked us up at our hotel to bring us to our car, then took us to the airport when we dropped the car off to us. Compact cost us $324. for 8 days. The car had only 13,000 miles on it, but had scratches all over it. Still, it worked fine and I found them very easy and helpful to deal with.
