From everything I've read on this board I know that buck island is a must. Trying to decide whether we should do full or half day tour. Also, what tour operators do you recommend. Also considering a day of fishing, what's running now and do you have recommendations on captains or boats. Leaving on Saturday! Can't wait

Hello Mattrach

I can give you a little help with the Buck Island question.

I have done both of these charters - full day charters

Except for the time sailing to and from buck island, captain heinz spends the entire time at buck island - about 2 hours on the guided snorkeling trail and the rest of the time at turtle beach - which my wife and I really enjoyed - that beach and that water are just postcard perfect.

Bluebeards spends about half of their time at buck and the other half at another beach on mainland stx - while there you can swim and enjoy a grilled lunch they provide and all the rum punch you like - which my kids enjoyed

We enjoyed both of these charters - but I would most likely go with captain heinz again - the more time spent at buck island the better
You have to pack your own lunch with him though (peanut butter & jelly sandwich and a tube of pringels)

Someone else is going to have to help you with the fishing charters - I've never checked into that

Let us know who you decided on when you get back and what you thought of buck island

Steve

We always send our guests with Heinz..and sometimes we go along ourselves!
Deep sea fishing---expensive, and be warned, you don't get to keep the fish. Hubby just went with Bunny recently (a friend was having a houseguest who wanted to go, so along he went),they got 3 dolphin (mahi). He's not a fan of the deep sea thing down here, says he'd rather go off Long Island or Cape Cod...but then we have our own boat here in stx too, and he was noting the spots where bunny caught the fish, for future reference, I think!

Matt,

If your time and budget permit I totally recommend Tan Tan Tours http://www.stxtantantours.com/ for a look at parts of St. Croix that even most long time residents have never seen. My original report is at https://www.vinow.com/wwwtalk/read.php?4,52085,52085#msg-52085 . You can also arrange just the west end tour, which includes the tidal pools and Mt. Victory.

Just tell Wave (the owner/operator) that it was recommended by the Blister Sisters (seriously!).

Joanne,
Can you give me rates for Tan Tan tours?
Thanks,
Judy

A friend gave me these rates, which correspond with what I paid for the full day:

$60-2 hrs.
$80-1/2 day
$110-full day w lunch (and it's a good lunch!)

I don't think anyone could possibly do the tidal pools in less than a half day, and that is THE highlight of the trip (not that the rest of it is not great!).

His cell phone is 340 473 6446, which is how I reached him. I'm not sure that he books really far in advance (I called on Saturday for Monday). And, if you book, be sure to tell him the Blister Sisters sent you !
