Hey there. I'm just wondering if it's worthwhile bringing in prepared foods to the Maho Bay campgrounds. (Have heard food is very expensive.) Does anyone know if customs allows you to bring in, lets say, fried chicken for your first night at camp? Are there any recommendations for cetain foods that are good for travel? Thanks AnnMArie

Oh Ann Marie, you will love it at Maho and STJ but trust me, after one visit, you will laugh that you ever wondered about fried chicken!! The restaurant at Maho is pretty fine and the prices for meals aren't too bad really considering that they load you up with good food and lots of it. Anything that can stand the heat would be ok but thing twice-unless you are on a terrifically limited budget (in that case, rethink STJ as it ain't cheap!) you can get pretty much anything at the Maho store or at Cruz Bay. Liquor is priced like it is in New England where we live (maybe we're just used to high prices) and they have alot of little stuff. Search this message board as there are a million threads about bringing frozen foods. If you have kids, you might bring some bags of trail mix and peanut butter but forget the marshmellow fluff due to the heat. You didn't say if you're bringing kids so if you are, bring small, nonperisable stuff they can't live without-nuts etc maybe? Its really pretty hot and you may not want to eat as often as you might think. We're coming back for trip #5 in November and I plan to bring a couple of boxes of good wheat crackers since they are easy to pack, are lightweight, good for afternoon cocktails, and are one of the more outrageously prices items on the island. Be prepared for poor choices in the markets for fruits and vegetables so if these mean alot to you , bring a ton of dried fruit maybe. Again search the board here and see what many folks suggest. Lots of ideas but basically, bring $$$ and enjoy yourself!

hi karrie! I think she was asking of she can bring hot food like friend chicken onto the plane and through customs. Is there a rule against it? I don't think so, since I always hear of people bringing Arbys, Krispy Creme, Philly Cheesesteaks, etc.

I don't know the certain answer to this..

Assuming that you're coming from the states, there's no customs to go thru on arrival at STT. And security checkpoints getting on a plane will let you take food onboard. Going home is a different story but that's not what you're concerned about anyway.

Enjoy!
