In the past it was no big deal to bring back to the states, but now with the new rules as far as carry on has anyone found away to bring back Liquor and not have it broken by the airlines
thanks for the info STT...i'll have a gander on the british airways site and see what they say about limits.
$8/litre? i'll drink to that!
Was there last week and bought one liter bottles of Cruzan Light and Dark for $4.49 each at the KMart in Tutu. This was more in the $7-8 range at Marina Mrkt and Food Ctr.
CCMom: Are you sure they were 1 liter and not 750ml? If for true, they must have been mis-priced but I'll check tomorrow as I have to make a run in there (and will stock up if that be the case!)
STT resident,
Yep, I double-checked - it says "One Liter". May you find plenty at that price... 😉
You give a whole lot of misinformation...legally that is. You said officer J. or whomever was wrong. He was not. Read the laws. The laws are not what you get away with, they are what they are. They're easily found and usually seem to disagree some with what some forum proponents say they are. Past experience...or not getting caught are not the same as the laws.
MY MISTAKE on quantity/price of VI rums! I was comparing prices of 1.75 liter vs. 1 liter, not 1 liter vs. 750ml. I will grovel profusely today between cleaning the yard and. cleaning the floors! Cheers.
I think the confusion is that those six-bottle holders hold 750 ML bottles and not 1L bottles. Therefore, six of them is only 4 1/2 liters, and you are under the 5-liter limit. If you bring back the 1L bottles, you can bring 5. If you bring back the 1.5L bottles, then you get three. Customs doesn't care what kind of container your liquor is in, as long as there are only 5L of it.
So, I think most of the posters are right here. Of course, I never encourage anyone to circumvent the law. I know people who did it when I went to Europe many years ago, but in these heightened days of airport security, I wouldn't chance it. However, one time when traveling from Canada, we tried to bring back an alcohol that was not allowed in the U.S. The customs guards just poured it out, and we went on our way. It wasn't a huge deal.
The law says you only can bring whatever how many free of charge over that you have to pay duty on it still cheaper the in the states.
Just a little aside here but if you are a U.S. Citizen (emphasis) the duty-free laws apply. If you are a resident alien (i.e. green card holder) they don't. I had made a few trips from the USVI to the mainland many years ago taking booze for friends with no problem until I was stopped and told that I wasn't allowed to transport them duty-free. I paid the duty on all six bottles (it wasn't that much) but when I came back home to the VI I called the then-head honcho at Customs.
He initially apologized for the confusion and said he'd get back to me to arrange for the taxes to be returned to me but he was equally surprised when he discovered that the language of the law does indeed say that the duty free exemptions apply only to bona fide U.S. Citizens. We both learned an interesting lesson! Cheers.
So why don't you get bona fide.
If this silly bill in congress passes, will you be able to get one of those 'z' cards.
A "z" card? I'm not an illegal alien. A little alien maybe but not illegal...
