In the past it was no big deal to bring back to the states, but now with the new rules as far as carry on has anyone found away to bring back Liquor and not have it broken by the airlines

Pack it properly in the appropriate box and you shuld not have any problems. They don't allow the 150 proof rum though. Too flamable.

So I guess you are saying that the only way to bring liquor is as checked luggage? No carry on allowed?

No I believe wherever you buy the liquor, they give you like a cardboard carrier that holds 6 (i think) bottles and each person can carry one on the plane. I think that's how it was when i went the last time! Hope this helps..! If im wrong...im sure someone could clear it up? 🙂

You can not bring liquor back as carry on since the 3oz liquid rule went into effect, it now has to be checked. If you buy it at the STT airport they do an excellent job of packing it for you - not sure how sucessful the other stores are at packing (have heard of some people receiving broken bottles upon arriving home.)

Last month, we brought back liquor in utilizing two methods: AH Riise packaging for twelve and lots of dirty clothes as shock-absorbtion for the other six. Everything arrived back in NoVa in one piece.

We came back last month and had no problems checking our booze. AH Riise did a good job of packing it. However, be aware, that if you are flying back thu Philly on US Air, your checked booze may be stolen. Our kids flew back that way on their way to Columbus, OH and one package has never arrived. The baggage claim people told my daughter that they are aware that this is a problem but so far they don't seem to have done much about the situation. I have read and heard the same thing from others about the situation in Philly.

Don:

We've used the cardboard six pack box 3 times in the last year.......I usually pack the bottom and top of each bottle with crushed newspaper as a shock absorber. So far we've been lucky.

Do they count the liquor as one of your checked bags? In Hawaii you check the pineapples as a bag but it doesn't count against the 2 bag/person limit. Just want to make sure we don't have too many bags.

Yes I believe it counts towards your 2 bag per person (1 bag per person on Spirit) limit but not 100% sure.

No, when leaving STT last month, we were told the liquor boxes were in ADDITION to our 2 checked bags. Going home, I didn't want to fool with the carryon so we checked everything. The four of us had 6 checked bags and 3 boxes of liquor. I thought we wouldn't be able to check it all and they said no problem, liquor doesn't count.

one of my boxes of liquor (with 4 bottles) didn't make it back. They called the next day to say it had arrived broken, and they sent me a $50 coupon for the next time I fly Continental.

btw - they have boxes for 2, 3, 4 or 6, so there is a box to fit ever how many you want to buy.

I took a small roll of bubble wrap ($2.99 at Target) with me. I wrapped our Cruzan up in it and put it in our checked bag surrounded by beach towels. All arrived fine.

I've ALWAYS checked the liquor - it's too heavy and I'm too short to try to heave it into the overhead (and it would hold up the line behind me). Bubble wrap, dirty laundry, newspaper, crumpled bags from purchases - I've used it all, and in nearly thirty trips I've had exactly two bottles broken and none stolen.

If you are bringing a bottle back in your suitcase i recommend taking a large ziploc bag (or two - they're handy) to assure that there is no leakage.

We recently returned with all liquor intact. We had one six bottle carrier. Took each bottle out and wrapped it in thin bubble wrap and then put it back in. Had one variety pack of 5 pints of rum wrapped in a neat sheet and three other bottles in a suitcase surrounded by neat sheet and bubble wrap. All arrived successfully!

Keep in mind that you may bring 5 litres per person (over 21) tax free as long as one or more is of local product (ie Cruzan Rum)

Correction J, you may bring 5 bottles back, and if one is Cruzan, you can bring a 6th bottle.

Hi Don,

If you see this, I wondered if you know someone named Keith that works in the wholesale electric business in Kansas City?

I recognize your name as someone my dad talks about and I think he's said you travel to St. John! Just thought I'd check and see if you are the same person. We just returned from our trip on May 6th and the entire family wants to go back ASAP!!

Happy travel planning!
