On my last trip to St, John, my biggest challenge was finding a good breakfast spot. I ended up eating breakfast on most days at an outdoor restaurant in Mongoose Junction. This year, I'm staying at a condo in Coral Bay. I expect that I'll just buy some muffins at the supermarket on the way in, but I'd still like to go out for breakfast every so often. Any recommendations (expecially for breakfast spots in and around Coral Bay)? And, is that spot in Mongoose Junction (I forget the name) still around?
Thanks!
P.S. For those staying on St. Thomas, you gotta try Gladys Cafe for breakfast. I'm staying at Point Pleasant for a couple days before St. John, and plan on visiting Gladys for eggs and grits. (Yes, Boston guys do eat grits.)
Donkey Diner will be closed for one week 12 July until 16 July. We will re-open for normal hours on 19 July. Sorry for any inconveneience. Thanks for your support.
I have to disagree with the posts on Chilly Billy's... we ate two breakfasts there last week and enjoyed both of them. The staff (especially Francis) were great fun, the food tasty (crepes, french toast), and on our first visit they let us stash our packs there for the day. Not day packs mind you, but 6000 ci expedition packs so we could shop while waiting for the Jost ferry.
Nice folks, and they remembered us when we went back for a second breakfast later in the week, and for a quick bite on our last day on STJ.
If you happen to go, tell Francis Mike and Pat (with the big packs) wish him well. He's a hoot.
Maybe the waitstaff has changed since dreamincaribe was there because we also had a great breakfast at Chilly Billy's last week...the waitress was FANTASTIC. She did overcharge us for my Baileys French Toast special but we had a great breakfast, great waitstaff and we were on a beautiful island so I really didn't care (it was only a couple of dollars off - either that or their special sign was wrong). My husband asked if he could get something special in his sandwich and the waitress asked if we were vacationers and then said "heck yeah, you spent good money to come to this island so you can have whatever you want!!". Our kind of waitress and she was lots of fun. There was a room full of patrons and she was handling all the tables and seemed to be doing a great job of it.
My family & I wouldn't dream of coming to St. John w/out having a least one or two breakfasts at Chilly Billy's. We've been going there since my kids were small and have always gotten good food and service from friendly staff who sometimes get busy, but at least in our experience, do their best. I love the kids' art work on the walls --hope it's still there; it's been a few years for us.
