On my last trip to St, John, my biggest challenge was finding a good breakfast spot. I ended up eating breakfast on most days at an outdoor restaurant in Mongoose Junction. This year, I'm staying at a condo in Coral Bay. I expect that I'll just buy some muffins at the supermarket on the way in, but I'd still like to go out for breakfast every so often. Any recommendations (expecially for breakfast spots in and around Coral Bay)? And, is that spot in Mongoose Junction (I forget the name) still around?

Thanks!

P.S. For those staying on St. Thomas, you gotta try Gladys Cafe for breakfast. I'm staying at Point Pleasant for a couple days before St. John, and plan on visiting Gladys for eggs and grits. (Yes, Boston guys do eat grits.)

Try the Donkey Diner in Coral Bay. Its right at the one intersection with Centerline Road, very funky, decent breakfast for sure.

I second the Donkey Diner in Coral Bay, doesn't look like much from the outside but it's perfect for breakfast. I know at one point they had closed due to some family issues and I don't recall hearing if they ever reopened....does anyone from St. John know if they ever reopened?!

Also on St Thomas you can get grits, bisquits and gravy at Molly Molone's!

Donkey Diner in Coral Bay is THE place for breakfast in Coral Bay (actually the only place for breakfast in Coral Bay 🙂 ) - wonderful food but they are closed Mon and Tues, and don't forget them for pizza on Wed and Fri nights. The Deli in Mongoose is still open along with JJ's and Chilly Billy's in Cruz Bay - all great for breakfast.

I'm on board with the Donkey Diner suggestion. If you make it over to Cruz Bay for breakfast, I second Chilly Billy's. They make an unforgettable breakfast burrito. The monkeybread French toast is yummy too. Here's a link. http://www.chillybillys.com/

Thanks for the suggestions! I look forward to seeing what Karrie means by "very funky."

While on island a month ago, we were underwhelmed by the breakfast at Chilly Billys and very impressed by the breakfast at Donkey Diner. At Mongoose in Cruz Bay, cant beat the baked goods at Deli Grotto.

Coral Bay:

Donkey Diner! Check their hours/days they are open. They also have internet access for a small fee and dog and donkey encounters on good days.

Miss Lucy's has a Sunday Brunch starting at 10am. Gorgeous view. Chickens in the Sea Grape trees. Fun goats. Good food. Getting very popular so go before 10am.

Cruz Bay: JJ's Texas-something-or-other had good breakfast burrito.

Okay, Boston- you already know how us Bostonians think (born and raised) Funky to us 53 year old somewhat hip adults is any place you can eat that's outside, chickens run around, you have torn shorts and flip flops on, the locals look like they could use a very good bath (no insult intended but boy, some look like the night before must have been quite the night!) and you feel like you could sit there long enough to then order beer with no one hurrying you. The breakfast menu is definately a breakfast menu, pretty good actually, several good, big meal deal choices. You'll see.

Donkey Diner, of course.

Also in Coral Bay a couple of guys recently opened a place that serves local food and are open for breakfast. They're in a white trailer just past the triangle heading toward Salt Pond. I think it's called Fire Foods.

Maho has a good breakfast in the pavilion restaurant. You don't have to be staying there to eat there.

I guess the chickens can distract my wife, while I have a beer... or two... or three...

Karrie - You can always spot a fellow Bostonian in St, John when you hear the reference to Coral Hahba. A few years back, I stopped by a place called Pepe's (now Island Blues) for dinner, and thought that I had walked into a Boston bar. There was Boston sports memorabilia on the walls and a Red Sox game on TV. I spoke to the owner who was a transplanted Bostonian and had brought a bit of Boston to the Islands (including a This Way to Fenway Park sign out by the intersection). Unfortunately, it looks like Pepe's didn't make it. I still keep a photo of Pepe's Fuhgeddaboutit sign on my wall at work.

Go BOSTON! Love those SOX! Hey, we stopped at Skinny Legs for a drink, and the waitress, Kathy, is from Boston also and said that during the series that BoSox won, the whole place was rooting for the Sox.

For breakfast on STT, the Delly Deck has a real good one as does Limetree Bistro at Bluebeard's Beach Club. Super eggs and homefries and the sausage was really good!

Donkey Diner is definitely the place to go for breakfast! It's down near Guy Benjamin school and the Moravian church. My favorite is the cream-cheese stuffed french toast with pineapple/mango syrup. Mmmmmmm! The other offerings are also very tasty. Be prepared to sit and enjoy the ambience, while they prepare the freshly made food. While you wait for your breakfast, relax and listen to some of the locals describe tales of living on the island. Some of them are believable ... others, I believe are "fish tales" that they tell (for their entertainment) just loud enough for the tourists to overhear! 🙂

Hubby and I make sure to bring and wear our Red Sox hats so people know where we're from.

Spend a day in Charlotte Amamlie wearing your hats and lots of "specials" are offered to you:

"Hey, Boston fans...get your Big Papi special over here!!"

"Hey, Red Sox, Boston discount inside!!"

We meet a lot of people, from Boston and elsewhere, by wearing our hats. Lot of baseball fans in the VI's.

When we were there last in Nov, we met the bartender at Shipwreck Landing who was from Providence where I work and four people at the bar were from Canton and Weymouth! You're right, the accent is a dead give-away. Now if only I could get interested in sports, I'd be a real Proper Bostonian!
BTW- I second the breakfast suggestion at Maho- they put out a superb, big, affordable breakfast and the view of the bay can't be beat!

Went to Donkey Diner last week and didn’t think it lived up to the hype. OK food, slow service, but nice people. Best breakfast we’ve had on STJ, just keep your expectations down to earth.

Yes, the food takes a bit longer than expected but I believe it is because they use all fresh ingredients...maybe even organic.

Don't bother trying Chilly Billy's. If you are not a local they will barely wait on you. In April, we tried to eat breakfast there. Plenty of seats available and they did not bother to get us seated for 15 minutes. After they seated us they moved us and then ignored us for another 10 minutes. We left and went to Deli Grotto. My husband heard someone in the kitchen complaining to the wait staff they they were losing customers by not getting on the ball. The beaches were calling us so that took priority over breakfast.

There must be a special connection between the Red Sox and the Virgin Islands. For those of you familiar with Kenny Chesney videos, you will see him wearing a Red Sox cap along with a Soggy Dollar t-shirt. (Of course, this has nothing to do with breakfast.)
