If ever there were a beautiful beach it would have to be Megans. Ok, so it’s not that great for snorkeling but the sand and the water are the best, and it is so calm and what a beautiful setting. What more could a girl want? We packed our cooler with the essentials and proceeded directly into the water which is exactly where we stayed for the good portion of a day. We did meet a nice couple that had been living on the island for over twenty years and recommended Indigos to us. And then there was Desmond, our lifeguard, who took off for a bit and put us in charge (heehee). There was a character, a young guy walking the beach back and forth with his IPOD, singing his heart out. Well I suppose it got me in the mood because I spontaneously burst out in song “I’m in heaven…”. It must have been catching since the next thing I know I am doing my whole musical theatre repertoire with another guy about ten feet away in the water. What a riot! We broke out the beer and just had to set up our own Corona commercial, so we had this young fella take our picture from behind our lounge chairs with the sea in the background, clinking our beers together, no faces, just the lounge chairs and beers and Magens. This was by far my favorite day so far. Finally tore our selves away and my buddy made another wonderful dinner, mussels in garlic butter sauce. We sorta just hung around and yakked and before you knew it, snoozville.
Next day was back to Zora’s for a fitting, then we decided on Iggy’s for lunch. Conch fritters and crabcakes were very good. I was surprised how deserted the place was and came to find out only twelve guests were staying at Bolongo Bay, and we saw at least half of them. And wouldn’t you know that as I looked up on the TV, my own Cincinnati Reds were playing and my favorite pitcher, Bronson Arroyo was on the mound. A little piece of home in St. Thomas. Our server at Iggy’s was great and so was a lady named Mommie, and yes, we called her Mommie. Go figure. We planned to take the tram ride up the hill to see the lights of Charlotte Amalie and the cruise ships leave. What a view, what a sunset, what a great time. There was an excellent band playing and we danced and carried on like kids. Be sure to go on Wednesday night!!
Next day was our sailing trip to St. John for some real snorkeling. We went on the sailboat Fantasy with Pam, our skipper and her first mate, Kevin. 6 of us in total, all nice people. You can tell Pam loves to sail and takes pride in keeping her boat in tip top shape. Unfortunately, not much wind but eventually ended up in Caneel Bay. WOW. Right off the bat, I saw tons of fish and coral and before everyone was even in the water I glance around to see a 3 foot barracuda checking me out. I sorta spazzed out and he quietly vacated the premises. As for my buddy, Kevin supplied her with a kids mask and snorkel and by golly, that did the trick, she was snorkeling like a pro. We swam around towards Paradise Beach towards Scott Beach about 100 yards from shore and were rewarded by seeing a giant sea turtle and a stingray! I was thrilled. We staying in the water for almost 2 ½ hours, finally swam back to the boat and had a great lunch of chicken curry and basmasti rice, salad and french bread. Delicious. The snorkeling was really fantastic and we were all disappointed to sail on back to Red Hook. We wanted it to last forever. Now I know how people get hooked on this place. Stopped by Fungi’s for more conch fritters and beer, and decided to try fungee, the dish…ick! Sorry, I guess I am not a fan of okra kinda mushed up into something. Indigo’s was closed for renovation so we headed to Duffy’s for their crab special. We stuffed ourselves and called it a night.
Last report to come: My friend’s last day, vendors market, Dilly Deck, etc.
Love your reports - and love Bronson too 🙂 I'm a Red Sox fan and adored him when he was here... miss him now!
I just loved walking into place and seeing MY game on the TV; "so far but yet so near" - you know what I mean...
Love your report - keep 'em coming!
yeah, I'm still working on mine... 🙂
Enjoying your report!
This part stopped my heart "Indigo’s was closed for renovation so we headed to Duffy’s for their crab special. "
They CLOSE for renovations? Good grief - I didn't know. I need to get a real handle on this menu limiting and closing deal with them 🙂
Did you have drinks at Bolongo with your meal? I think I forgot to add this to my report - VERY disappointing there for drinks. Ours were watery. At first, our whole group wasn't there, so I was alone and asked for my drink to be "corrected" (I even offered to PAY extra). They fixed it, no charge. Then, when our group came, others started to compalin about their drinks (I had forgotten to warn them - so this was not a case of follow-the-leader) and the bartender refused to fix their drinks without charging extra. We agreed to pay extra for that round, but swore we would drink only beer at Bolongo from them on - can't water that down. I wonder if anyone else has had this experience with them.
It's the Caribbean - It's rum - It's not that difficult.
Blu - since rum is supposed to be cheaper than water in the VI's, you wouldn't think they'd water it down, would you? that's crazy. did they leave it sitting until the ice melted or what? this is another thing I'm taking notes on - no Bolongo Bay, watery drinks!
I wasn't really planning to going there any way - with only 7 nights, there are too many other places I'd rather check out.
Blu, by this time in our trip, I decided that rum wasn't my drink of choice, so I had wine and my friend ordered her ususal wimpy Jack and Coke and was happy. She actually used the word "wimpy". hehe
