What is the procedure for leaving St. Thomas on a plane with liquor? Do they allow it in liquor boxes from the store? Or do you have to pack it in your luggage. Thanks.

Yes, you can check in a box of liquor for your flight. If you are flying American, they will NOT charge checked bag fees for a liquor box. My liquor has always made it okay, but then I usually only go as far as Miami with it. Sometimes it doesn't--some friends took theirs to Hawaii and had two broken bottles on arrival. Best to wrap each bottle up with bubble wrap. I wouldn't recommend putting in your checked luggage unless you are sure it won't break in your suitcase and get all over your clothes.

You can take up to 6 bottles, as long as one is produced in the VI (i.e. rum). No 151 rum though, or other high proof since it is flammable.

You must check liquor, you cannot carry-on. Even if you buy at the airport duty-free, they will put it in the luggage hold.

We just left STT with four bottles of rum and 2 Absolute in tow, bubble wrapped in our checked suitcases, and it arrived
safely. If you buy it in the airport, you will be able to take it on the plane, they will have packaged it for you, might pay a little more, but not much. It is still a bargain, compared to home prices

STT airport now has a duty free liquor store inside the terminal, in the gate area and after you have passed through security so if you buy your liquor there you are allowed to carry it on with you. If you purchase anywhere else on island you will have to a) put it in your luggage or b) check the box as a piece of luggage as it (obviously) is over the 3oz liquid rule.

Also remember if you purchase after the security and you place it in the overhead compartment, you will hand carry it off the plane. If you are then connecting to another destination, you will NOT be able to hand carry it back on another plane. You will have to check it and may be subject to fees.

Not true, you can connect with carry on liquor. Unless you have to exit the terminal and re-enter through security screening, then you'd have to check it.

It's funny how random the airlines are. When we returned in December on Delta we connected in ATL and we were fine carrying our boxes of booze.

Yes correct - once you are within security you may carry on - they "should" only make you check it if the overheads are full just like any other bag once the overheads are full

Just flew home Tuesday on US Air from STT, stopping in Charlotte, finishing in Boston. Several of my friends bought alcohol in the duty free in the airport after security. The shop clearly knows what they are doing. They boxed it up and taped it shut. We were able to have it as a carry-on all the way to Boston, even after stopping in Charlotte (however we didn't exit security in Charlotte).
