Sharifa,

Are you on island? I called a local book store and they said they never carried it and can not get it. They said it was put out by the Dept. of Education and you might need to call them concerning getting it - it is used in the public schools for history class.

When I went on-line and did a search this is what I found:

"In 1983 the public library published Clear de Road: A Virgin Islands History Textbook written by Roger Hill and Illustrated by St. Croix artist, Elroy Simmonds. This project was a part of a cultural heritage project called "Emancipation a Second Look, sponsored by the Virgin Islands Bureau of Libraries, Museums and Archives and funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities. The textbook project was funded by the Heritage Studies Program of the U.S.Department of Education. Simmonds' illustrations depict the cultural perspective of St.Croix through history. The originals of these illustrations did not survive hurricane Hugo. The book, heavily demanded as a public school textbook, now out of print, remains a treasure for young students to tap."

Hope it helps.

no, I am not on the island( I'm in philadelphia). I ask my sister to ask around. She did, everybody knows about the book but do not know where to find it. I will pay any amount of money for one. We used it in social study class in the six grade at Joseph Gomez. All my friends said that was the last time they saw or even heard of it. One thing I can remember is that it was filled with information. Anytime there is a paper or project I always try to do something dealing with my history, but its hard to do with out printed data.

Sharifa,

You want the book to use as a resource for writing papers now for high school? college?

Try looking on Amazon.com and search for Virgin Islands History... and other relevant terms and then look through other VI history books there are and that might interest you.

You might try the Dept. of Education Curriculum Center at (340)775-2250 and ask about getting the book.
