What happened to the condition of this property? We stayed at the property in February, and maintainence was woefully neglected. We spoke to timeshare owners, and they are up in arms. Anyone have any idea what is going to be done to refurbish the property?

Don't mean to scare anyone, but there is a major toxic mold problem there. I would avoid the first floor of the building like the plague. I know because I was tested positive for tricothecenes. Which is a very toxic mold. The company is aware and is doing nothing to protect its customers. Just thought you should be warned.

Frenchman's Reef anyone?

I am sorry to hear that.... when where you there? was it recently? How do you know they are aware of this problem? My family and I are set to go in July and I hate to hear that this place has this problem.

Last Feb and March. Just don't stay in building 2. Make sure you get the new villa's. The mold is Toxic. I am still very sick from it. Also the GM told me I was probably sick from the Apt. Plumbing problems, leaking in the walls. I hope your not allergic to it.

Kristina: I've no affiliation with Bluebeard's but did anyone report this "toxic mold" and is it an absolute positive that you became ill from contact with it at Bluebeard's?

The reason I'm questioning is that the Health Department and EPA here are very quick to jump on anything like that.

You say that "the GM told me I was probably sick from the Apt. Plumbing problems, leaking in the walls. " That doesn't sound like something that the average GM would say (not that I'm disputing you in any way) but I think the turnover of GMs there is rather more than usual.

Do you think you might ask your physician to contact the Heath Department here if this is something that anyone should be concerned about. Hope you feel better soon.

I hate top weigh in again, but when i first posted about our stay in February, I mentioned the state of Hilltop1. there were no rooms occupied on the first floor at that time, an d we were told by some of the staff (maids, and custodian help) that the reason for the vacancies was due to water damage and mold in those units. I agree with some of the other posters that the resort is nicely situated, however the risks from a stay there currently preclude us from recommending it to anyone going to St. Thomas.

First off the manager has been there for several years. I got to know him personally. Nice guy. Second went to the ER twice down there for this. Told them where I was exposed. Told them about the 12 units that were uninhabitable. Sad truth is most Dr's don't really know anything about mold poisoning. So have you been to St Thomas before because if you had you would know how the government works. Very slow!!!!! if at all. Third world comes to mind. And Yes I was tested and found out I was exposed to a heavy dose of several different toxic molds that have now colonized in my sinuses. I would not wish this on anyone. You get me the # to the D.E.C. I'll call.

Regards,
Kristina Townsend

Have I been to STT before? Well, I guess yes, as I've lived here for over two decades. Yes, of course I know the government works slowly in many respects but as I said in my post, they do jump on things of this nature very quickly. I wasn't disputing what you posted, just asking a couple of what I think are relevant questions.

The number for EPA (US Federal Environmental Protection Agency) is (340) 714-2333. You might also contact the STT/STJ Hotel Association at (340) 774-6835.

kristina: You might be interested in this from the CDC: http://www.cdc.gov/mold/stachy.htm. There are molds growing everywhere and a huge business in cleaning it up ($$$) and liability lawsuits ($$$.) The term "toxic', while shocking, does not accurately describe molds.

Who tested you? I would bet most people have mold spores in their sinuses.

Mold is nothing to mess around with. "If" the 1st floor of any building is closed because of mold, you can bet that the mold has spread and is still spreading. I work in a business where mold is a daily occurrence, but there have been some buildings that are so bad, that the only thing to do is to knock them down.

Yes, alot of people have mold spores in their sinuses, but you don't have to be exposed to it when on vacation.

Sounds like a real serious problem to me that's not being addressed by the owners.

Ken,
No dog in this fight but in no way did any Castle money nor anyone else's but the private owners at the Elysian develop the Elysian. I'll spare you all the names who did negotiate and develop the property (altho there is still some undeveloped land). It was operated as a luxury resort in the beginning and in the same manner as Secret Harbour with the owners putting their units up as hotel availability when they were not using them and they were rented along with the unsold units by the Condo Assoc. At one time there was a sort of agreement - and I don't recall all the details - between LimeTree (which is now the BeachClub), Bolongo and the Elysian and when BlueBeard's joined up, Bolongo chose not to stay in the group. Then just a few units at the Elsyian became "timeshare" as most were still privately owned and it was the Condo Assoc - the private owners - who were steering the ship in those days. I don't remember anything about the financing and reopening of the Beach Club after years of neglect after severe hurricane damage but the Condo Assoc at the Elysian was instrumental and did a fabulous task of fixing up after both Hugo and Marilyn!
I just find that with all the rumors and mistaken information that has been around forever, it is repeated as gospel and thought you might appreciate some insight.

Who pulled your response to who? I'm sorry, haven't checked in much today...but we stayed there last year, so I'm curious. I can't tell who you are responding to, or what the question/answer was. Please PM me if you'd rather.

Obviously age is catching up on me fast and my basic comprehension is going down the tubes because I don't understand the last two posts at all. I posted numbers previously in post dated June 14. You're welcome!

Thank you the ##. I will be calling Monday. To the person who asked who tested me, Realtime Laboratory out of Dallas. Matter of fact Dr. Hooper spoke in front of the US Senate in April about how Dr's in the US are not educated on all the complexity's of mold and what they can do to your health. While I was in the bad apt for three weeks, I started hearing about the floor I was on. I wondered why I didn't hear anybody? We all know now. I also heard everybody there is praying for another hurricane so they don't have to pay over a half million to clean it up. I'm guessing they would have to shut the whole thing down to do that.

So beware of the place, you don't want to go through anything I've already had to go through.. Imagine having to throw out your whole wardrobe, or having to wear a mask to the grocery store. Or worse forgetting what you bought your little girl for her Birthday.

KT...i feel for you. I believe you and i'm sorry you had to go through that. I don't have allergies, that I know of, to anybody, but I believe that mold can cause anybody to get sick.

Wish you luck! And i know somewhere i won't every stay. That's for the heads ups.

Just a coincidence, but I'm watching Extreme Makeover and the story goes.....

Young couple buys a house they swear they can fix up. Husband "firefighter" works really hard trying to fix it up. One night, the husband is laying in bed, next to his wife, and he goes into convulsions. Yep...toxic mold that they weren't even aware of. Just like that, he dies and he didn't even know he was at the end of his life.

This is how bad mold is.
