My husband and I are going to be staying at Bluebeard's Castle in December. My mother-in-law gave us the place as a Christmas gift. They stayed there approximately 10-years ago and loved it. I have been on the internet reading comments on the place and they are making me very nervous. There are very few positive comments. How horrible is this place. Could someone please put my mind at ease. Thanks.

Jones,

Hope you are still checking this site. I was waiting to hear from you about your trip. If you are reading this, how was Bluebeard's?

I don't leave until Dec. 26. It is getting here rather fast. It will be over and I will be back to work before I know it.

Roka:

I am scheduled at Bluebeard's with the husband and kids the week before you, leaving the day you come in. I too have read the mixed reviews on the web but for the price I'm paying, I'm not concerned. It would appear that there are too many fun things to do outside the room to worry about it. You're only sleeping there. 🙂

I've traveled Europe, staying in every type of accomodation and even when I couldn't speak a language well, things went fine.

Just go and enjoy (especially without the kids!) . The USVI should be as safe as anywhere else if you just used standard good judgment.

I found a rental car on expedia two nights ago. Don't forget, they do drive on the left, and in mostly left-hand drive cars! Can't be any worse than driving in London or in Whales where all the signs are in Welsh!

I'm looking forward to a Christmas outside of New England. 🙂

Have a great trip!

I have gotten over my fear of Bluebeard's. Since my husband and I aren't paying for the room, whatever it is, it will be worth it. My husband has points banked to get a free car rental from one of the car rental places in USVI but when he called, they didn't have anything. He did find a car available through Budget, but of course we will have to pay for that (shucks)!!

My husband and I have never been outside of the US borders. I have always been so jealous of my mother-in-law and her husband who are world travelers. I don't think anything will ruin my trip. It will be the first time I have spent a week away from my 5 year old and I also have a 5 month old now. It will be a welcomed break. My husband has spent the last fourth months working in Alabama and home on weekends. So I have been living the life of a single parent and working full-time. Totally stinks!!!

Thanks T.J.!! Hope you and your family have a safe and wonderful trip.

You sound like you need the break. My husband used to travel full-time from Monday through Thurs every week and when he was in the military, for months on end...it's like being a single parent without the benefit of being able to have a date! 🙂

When your kids get older, think about taking them with you. I started when my youngest was three and my oldest was seven. I took them to Scotland to meet my husband at a conference. Both are very seasoned travelers and love all of our quirky adventures. This past year, my daughter, who is now nine, announced that she'd like to go to Florence to see Michelangelo's David...so we did! Neither of them ever complained about the endless walking.

I think my kids know how lucky they are to get a new view of the world! I've also taken trips with the in-laws and my kids; those are memories that the kids will have forever.

Have a great time and look for places that you'd like your kids to see when you visit the islands again! I've heard from others that the Caribbean is very child friendly. Have a blast!
