Paul,

In case you haven't been there yet, STJ is very, very hilly. Unless you have legs like Lance Armstrong, getting around STJ by bike is almost impossible. I don't think I've seen more than one or two bikes during the 3 visits I've made to STJ.

It is also an extremly dangerous place to ride a bike on the road. Narrow roads, no shoulders, sharp curves, cars designed to be driven on the right be driven on the left, and tourists staring at the scenery and not watching the road.

endurance sports is our newish bike shop on st thomas and they have bike rentals. it's in the back half of the gnc store in havensite. you can take your bike with you on the passenger ferry from red hook (i'm assuming from charlotte also, but i've never done this) to st john for no extra fee. i'm almost positive that bikes are not allowed on any national park trails, but i've never had anyone question me. if you do ride the trails, be very cautious of hikers and try to stay in the less popular areas (bordeux mtn trail, brown bay trail, etc.). if you're not familiar with mountain biking trail etiquette, stay on the paved and dirt roads, as there are plenty. the warnings of dangerous road situations are not exaggerated. left hand curves are especially dangerous since the driver is at the worst possible angle to see around the bend. if you are not a very experienced rider (familiar with making yourself seen in traffic), i wouldn't recommend riding on the busy roads. aside from the warnings, i ride in st john frequently and it is a great place to be on a bike. the climbs are challenging, the descents are a blast, and the scenery is amazing. i hope this helps and be careful.
