Are there any bicycle rentals available on St. John? I would love to cycle around the island on a mountain bike if there were any available for at a decent weekly rate.

Thanks,
Rob

Thanks, That looks like a fun day of exploring.
What I was hoping for however was that one of the resorts or shops in town may have a rental that I could get for a week so that I could do some exploring on my own. If that isn't available then this is a good alternative to get me on a bike for a day that i am there. We are staying at a villa over near fish bay and I was hoping to ride into town instead of having to take the jeep every time.

I'll keep looking.

Rob,
Unless you have trained for marathon bike riding, one day of bike riding on St. John will be enough for you. The roads are winding, steep and often slippery after occasional showers. There are donkeys, goats and other creatures not accustomed to seeing people on bicycles and can become very interested in you. There are drivers not accustomed to seeing people on bicylces and will not see you as they round the corner. Rent a jeep and play it safe ... the hills you see in the beautiful photographs are not just scenery, all the roads are like that! Enjoy your stay.
Pamela.

I have trained for and riden in a few, but more so riding is a hobby and how I exercise everyday and that keeps me in decent shape, (keeps the love handles off so I can drink more beer) I was looking for was a way to keep up my routine is all and if a guided tour is the best I can get I'll take it.

If you think riding in the Islands with the drivers, roads and donkeys are bad you should try riding in Texas with the drunk rednecks and the dead armadillos! 🙂

Have a happy day.

There's a great bike tour offered on Water Island by the Rampino family. I've yet to go on it but have heard great reviews. WI is the best place to ride in my opinion because there is basically no automobile traffic. You can also rent bikes on St. Thomas and take them over on the ferry to Water Island (levaes from Crown Bay Marina). There's a nice bike shop in the back of GNC in Havensight that rents good bikes. Perhaps you could rent one from them and take it over to STJ. I agree that biking on STJ is ambitious, but if you've been training, go for it!

Riding on STJ will be tough. I ride my bikes 5,000 miles a year and would never consider riding either a bike or motor scooter on STJ's roads. Might consider a mountain bike if they had a network of off road trails.

Besides the previously mentioned road hazards be aware of the sun and the heat. You will be working very, very hard riding on STJ so be sure to carry two 22oz water bottles with you. Stateside I can average 18 -21 mph on a 40 mile ride. On STX riding the east end loop I really work to average 13 mph. STX is hilly, but less so than STJ or STT. For your next trip to the VI consider STX. Best island in the USVI for cycling!

I have rented bikes from Endurance sports on STX and they do rent good bikes.

Enjoy your visit and be very careful!!!!!!! Good luck.

Jim

Please keep moving. The last thing we 'rednecks' want is a poor tourist getting in the way of our armadillo derby!
If you want to keep in shape on STJ and still stay safe, a walk from Fish Bay to Cruz will certainly get the heart pumping.
