Does anyone know if bicycle rental is available on St. Thomas or St. John? We will be staying on St. John and wouldn't mind avoiding car rental if bicycles are available.
I'm not sure the elevation changes of St John but STT is one big mountian bike trail! the island goes from 0 to 1500 ft of elevation 😀 Bolongo bay has 3 wheel ones you can use on the water 🙂
Hello Badger,
Using a bicycle for general transportation on either St. Thomas or St. John is not really an option for most people; exceptions would be maybe people training for the Tour de France :). The reason being that the islands are mountainous, with very little flat areas. There is a group on St. Thomas that uses bicycles for exercise, riding on one of the only flat routes which is Havensight-downtown-UVI usually in the early morning when there is little traffic. There is a Bike Race on St. John, part of the St. John Festival, and I think the route is the NP Visitors Center in Cruz Bay over to Coral Bay. It's not a flat route.
Anyway regarding bike rentals, don't know of any on St. Thomas, there used to be a shop called Endurance Sports but they seem to have closed a while back. On St. John, they used to have bicycles for rent at Cinnamon Bay Campgrounds - not sure if they still do. You can try contacting them to check http://cinnamonbay.com/home.html. There is a bike tour on St. John through Arawak Expeditions, http://www.arawakexp.com/biketrips.htm.

Thanks for the info Walt and Islander. Now we just need to decide between public transportation and car rental. We are very much looking forward to our visit.
Bicycle??? Heck, I wouldn't even ride a scooter on most of the roads. A bicycle is not a practical choice for transportation. Although I do have to say, "Hats off" to the gentleman I saw last summer riding his bicycle around St Thomas. He HAS to be in training for something.
I think you will regret not getting a car
Public transportation can run up your cost quickly.
