Hey Guys,
Need a little help. I was checking out the ferry schedule and I didnt see a ferry that took you to St Croix (maybe I overlooked it). What would you consider the best way to get to St Croix from STJ? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Are you staying more than a day? I would suggest taking a seaplane from STT or if the ferry is running to STX from STT???
Teresa
We would just like to go over for the day.
Definitely the seaplane; you avoid airports on both ends. The ferry had problems, became unreliable, and may be altogether defunct at this point.
Unless you want to meet someone or have a specific reason, I'd just stick to STJ, STT, or take a trip from STJ to BVI (like Jost or Virgin Gorda) for a day trip and save STX for another trip altogether. STX has it's own charms and it would be too hard to see the sites in a single day. All you'd end up doing is hassling with travel if you're looking at a day. IMO it isn't worth the travel hassle for just a few hours one day.
I live on STX and have to agree with Lizabeth, if you are only on STJ for a week, stay there.
STX is wonderful and I'd suggest another trip in the future to STX.
I am going to St Croix's Mango Melee on Sun, July 1 from STT.
Smith's Ferry offers daily service Fri - Mon, leaving STT approx 9:30 and leaving STX for return approx 4:30. RT fare is $90.
I also went to view turtle watching with St Croix Environmental Assoc last month, but I flew on the new airline, Sea Flight which left from the airplane charter area close to UVI. Left Wed late afternoon, came back Fri late afternoon, and was able to view leatherback turtles coming onto Sandy Point beach to lay their eggs, Whim Museum, Cruzan Rum distillery, St George Botanitcal Garden, beer drinking pigs, rain forest, and downtown Christensted. Stayed at Sandcastle at the Beach for $89/nite near Frederiksted.
If you'd love to see gorgeous Danish colonial architecture (which you can't see in STJ), it may be worth it to you to go for a day. It all depends on what you're looking for.
Folks,
The original poster wasn't asking "if" s/he should go for a day but the best way to do so.
ms411,
Glad to hear Smith now has daily service! I wonder how long it will last...
CoCo,
The ferry is probably less expensive than the sea plane but with travel time and the rough seas between STT and STX I'd still spring for the sea plane.
But since the original post DID indicate that the poster was looking for ferry information as well, it suggests that "best way" might also mean "cheapest way". If I had posted the original message, I would certainly have appreciated Lizbeth's comments...
Thanks to everyone who has replied so far. I appreciate all the help. We are looking to go just for the day, so maybe the seaplane would be better for us. We obviously wont get to see much, but taking the seaplane would accomodate us more as sparing us more time to spend over there. Im thinking the ferry, we will just spend more time on the seas. Any other suggestions are welcomed.
You have 3 flight options for getting to St Croix:
1. Seabourne Airlines AKA the seaplane. They fly from the Marine Terminal building in downtown STT, and land in the Christensted Harbor. They fill up quickly so reserve EARLY. Phone 340-773-6442.
2. Sea Flight. This is the new airline that flies from the charter area near UVI and goes into the St Croix airport. A taxi meets you at the St Croix aiport and can take you anywhere you want to go. Phone 340-714-3000. They advertise lowest fares between St Croix and St Thomas. When I went it was $70 each way.
3. Cape Air. They fly from airport to airport, and fares rise the closer to departure. Phone 800-352-0714.
Try not to go when there's a big event going on, because seats are tight, and Seabourne has been known to overbook, unless you have an assurance that one of the other carriers will also be flying and will have room.
Thank-You ms411.. I will call them this week, I appreciate the information..
