Im trying to plan a day for my trip June 1st- June 8th. What should I defintly visit and what is overrated. Thanks
That's a pretty vague question. Can you narrow it down a little? I mean, like what types of things do you like to do? Are you adventurous? Do you like the water? Do you like to try new things? How old are you? How physically fit? Do you like to drink? These are just a few questions that, when answered, can give us a better idea of the types of things to recommend for you. I mean, if you are a 21 year old college boy, then sending you to see the synagogue is probably not gonna cut it, am I right? On the other side of that coin, if you are an 88 year old grandmother, then sending you out for a full-day of marlin fishing is probably not your cup of tea, either. See what I mean? Help us to help you. 🙂
Im 25, adventurous, in shape, love the water, and love history.I love to snorkel. I've already planned a day sail and a catamaran sunset sail with my girlfriend. We are young but not into partying. Although we do like to visit nice restaurants and drink the night away. We want to visit and do as much stuff as we can. Anything you can recommend would be great. We've been to trunk bay and plan to go back. During the days we plan to visit the beaches on st. john and st. thomas. We are gonna snorkel and swim as much as possible. We would like to devote a day to see the 99 steps, bluebeards castle, and any other historical place we can find. We love to try new things, and see diffrent fish and animals. Thanks again.
Hello Longisland,
June 1st- June 8th...
On June 3rd, plan to attend Pan-o-Rama on St. John. Its part of their Carnival festivities. That was the date provided on the tentative Carnival schedule, I'll follow up with the Carnival folks tomorrow to see if I can get the official schedule with times and definite dates. Its a showcase of local musical talent, various steel pan groups perform.
The one day to explore the historical sites in downtown Charlotte Amalie is a great idea. https://www.vinow.com/stthomas/attractions_stt/attractions_town.php on that page you will find a guide to some of the historical sites.
The Caribbean show at Bolongo Bay is a nice one to attend. And for a beach party with local band you can head to Sapphire on Sunday afternoon.
For a different snorkel adventure try a night snorkel trip; http://www.nightsnorkel.com/.
Try some local food at Cuzzins in Charlotte Amalie, maybe on the day you are sightseeing or shopping.
Happy Hour at Sunset up at Paradise Point is fun; its on Wednesday nights starting at 6pm. Usually has live music.
Enjoy,
--Islander
Thank you so much. You gave me some great ideas, I cant wait to go down. 🙂
Must do's - STT....
Islander has great suggestions. I would add....
In no order.....
1. If you'll have a vehicle, take a driving tour...make sure you venture out to the unbeaten path on the West End. Get a map and map out a route. Visit Lindberg Beach and if you have a 4WD, visit Neltjberg Bay - search for some of my old posts on Neltjberg and pics of it.
2. Visit Coki Beach for some major local color - music, food, people watching, etc. Make sure you try Pate' (beef or saltfish - I prefer saltfish). Snorkel!
3. Have Lunch by the Pool at Indigo at Megan's Point - and swim in the pool while you wait for you food. Hang out for the afternoon.
4. Take the night Ferry to STJ under the stars - for dinner.
5. Take the petroglyph hike on the STJ National Park trail
6. Take a driving tour of STJ
7. Ferry to Virgin Gorda and experience The Baths
8. Have a "spiked" shake at STT's Udder Delight (STT Dairy Farms) on your way to Magen's Bay
9. As Islander said, stop by the Sunday Beach Jam at Sapphire Beach
10. An upscale "local" dinner at Cuzzins
How many days?? Hmmmmm...maybe you'll need to plan a repeat visit 🙂
If we have as much fun as I think we are going to, we are gonna plan a 2 week vacation in January to go back. Thanks for the info!!
Anyone know of any special events or parties on STT or any of the other islands between June 26 - June 30th. We will be staying @ Sapphire Beach.
Thanks.
Longisland: If you're interested in history, try to visit the old Danish Cemetery which is located across from the old Knud-Hansen Hospital in Hospital Ground right up from the Lionel Roberts Stadium which is at the bottom of Mafolie Hill and right next to the Moravian Cemetery. Got that?
This cemetery was and remains "my baby" and that's a long story but if you can get in there (see PS note), the history contained on those gravestones is quite awesome. It's a beautiful spot, overshadowed by huge old mahogany trees, a most tranquil space. Merchant seamen passing through from England and Germany taken down by Yellow Fever back in the old days, past dockmasters of The West Indian Company Limited, employees of the old Pacquet line, travelling missionaries from Scotland who died here along with their wives and children from Yellow Fever. Locals, old familiies here. It's a fascinating place.
My PS is that you should contact the present Consul for Denmark and see if the gate is unlocked. His name is Soren Blak and his telephone number is (340)776-0856. The only reason I suggest this is that the last time I went there, about a month ago, the gate was locked. Your question has inspired me to follow up on why the gate was locked up and I'll revert with more info in due course!
