I am looking to rent a villa for a week on St. John's in May. There will be 2 couples and we don't plan on eating too many meals in (no cooking on vacation!). For this reason I was thinking that I needed to be walking distance from Cruz Bay (I am looking at Lavendar Hill Suites). Is that really necessary though? There are some great, reasonably priced villas in Chocolate Hole and the Gifft Hill area. Would we spend a lot of time driving into town for meals?
Thanks in advance for your advice!
For the record, there is no 's' for St. John.
Chocolate Hole is no more than 5 minutes from Cruz Bay center but you will need to consider parking hunt unless you rent from local agency and can use thier lot. It is not impossible to find a spot, just extra time.
I would not limit your choice to walking distance.
I would also agree w/ Chris on Chocolate Hole and add the Great Cruz Bay area as well. The issue on staying in Cruz Bay would be town noise. (Hearing a dump truck gearing down coming down the hill on Centerline road is not a sound you easily get used to.) Gifft Hill is a little remote to me. I would suggest calling one of the Villa Rental companies that are ON St. John and seek their advice. I have found the folks at Catered To most helpful. I would also avoid the Mountian villas (unless you are in the Witness Protection Program!)
This will be our sixth year in St. John and dealing with Seaview Homes has been a pleasure. Mark and Nanci are very helpful. Have stayed in town at the Gallows which is convenient (but you do hear the noises from Cruz Bay) and now stay in Great Cruz Bay area. Enjoy-and you will find cooking on vacation is not a chore with such a beautiful view and the cost of eating out each night!
