Hi Everyone,
Our family of 4 will be visiting St. Thomas as first time visitors next month. We'll be on island for 8 nights before heading to the BVI. We will be renting a car, and we will be visiting STT and STJ.
I have some questions....
When we first arrive on St. Thomas, what is the best way to initialy acquaint ourselves with the island. Should we just hop in the car and start driving? How long does it take to circle the island, not counting stopping for beach time, etc.?
Or maybe we should take the $1 (or is it $2?) safari taxi around the island. How can we find out the safari pick up locations... is there one near the Marriott? How often do the safari taxis typically come? Is there any "narration" on these tours?
Or maybe we should do more of an organized tour? I've read the names os a couple of the tour companies, but many of those are geared toward cruise ship pax and include a "beach stop" and a "shopping stop", which we don't want... we can do that on our own. If we go with this option, we would prefer a simple tour including historical information about the island.
Any recommendations?
Thank you!!
Ron - Still haven't called the certified taxi driver association... will try to do that tomorrow.
In the mean time, does anyone know about these tour guides:
* Henry Christopher - www.eeetours.com - $30 per person
* Godfrey Tours - www.godfreytoursvi.com - $25 per person
* Sunny Liston - www.sunnylistontours.com - $25 per person
I think these 3 cater to cruise passengers. Is that an OK thing or might an island tour be more rushed with this crowd? I emailed Henry (above) and he said he could pick us up at the Marriott on the way to the dock... and return us there as well.
Do you think a tour would be worth this ($120 + tip for a family of 4, vs. $15.95 for the audio tour CD)?
By the way, Blu... I found out that CD is available at our car rental agency... so I called them to place one on hold for us! They are less expensive to purchase in person (and, of course, no shipping cost).
Oh, and I keep forgetting to call and find out if the CD has "historical information". You know, work always messes with my best laid plans (that, and the time difference from the west coast!).
Ron,
I contacted Alvin today (sorry... didn't realize you gave me Alvin's direct cell #... thought I was calling the taxi association in general... should have read your email more closely!).
Looks like we're all set for a tour with Alvin. $25 per person w/ pick-up and drop-off @ the Marriott.
Thank you!
Carole
Hey Ronnie!
I missed that article. I am so glad to see they are doing this. I lived on island two years and have heard a lot of tales, but wanted the factual info. I think tourists do too. I am glad it is catching on. For the tourists, it won't be a boring lecture, trust me, between the gorgeous scenery, people, the ride up and down the hills, it is fabulous.
Teresa
Oh, I forgot to mention, Ron... I told Alvin I was referred by you!!
Thanks again.
Carole
oops... Ron, if you are out there...
I could barely hear Alvin on the phone and I thought I was told to write to:
islandertaxi@island.vi
with our details on when we would like to take the tour... but I must have heard it wrong or written it down incorrectly, because the email bounced.
Anyone know the proper email address for this taxi association?
Thanks.
You might try [email protected]
Omitting the "s" on island would make it bounce back.
Thank you Trade. It was not a good connection when we were speaking. I read, and spelled, everything back but there was obviously still a miscommunication!
