Best flights from LA or getting there from Cancun

I have to be in St. Thomas for a wedding in late October. I live in LA and all of the flights (that I found on the normal travel sites, at least) are extremely pricey and have 2-3 connections. I have to be near Cancun the weekend before for another wedding.

Does anyone have any advice on flights to STT from LA?

Does anyone know anything about traveling from Cancun to the VI? Would it make more sense for me to just go straight from Mexico to the VI sometime during the week than go all the way home and all the way back to the Caribbean?

Any help is MUCH appreciated.

You will probably need to route your flights through Puerto Rico or Miami. There is no easy way to get here from there.
