We've used Saint John Car Rental and always been satisfied. They have a lot where you can park when in Cruz Bay. I've read occasional complaints about this or that company, but most folks seem to find most companies satisfactory. There's not going to be much price difference between any of them.

I know that a lot of people use Conrad Sutton like St. John Car rental they allow you to park in their lot when you are in town. This is a real plus as parking is extremely limited.
I personally have not used any rental agency as we have our own car on island. But the two aforementioned have been the ones that I've heard the most positive things about.

We will be in st.John/st.Thomas 3-30 from the Triumph. We have 4 adults and 3 kids we think renting a car sounds a little more pratical for us. We want to to to Trunk bay, Waterlemon cay Annaberg platation and shopping. Anyone able to give me a web site or a tele# for the rental agencies? Also What time do the Wter Taxi's start going from Redhook to Cruz bay? Thanks any info would be great!!

I've used http://bookajeep.com/index.html twicenow. They're L&L Jeep Rental and I HIGHLY recommend them. Terrific service, new and clean vehicles and they really do meet the ferry on arrival and departure which makes things just sooooooo much easier.
Two thumbs up from me!

Great board with lots of good info. It appears the majority of responders favor renting a 4x4 on St. John rather than St. Thomas (and doing the ferry deal). We have a family reunion there this August (start of the wetter season), so a 4x4 sounds like a must. I certainly don't want to create a Kodak moment for Cody! I was about getting a jeep on St. Thomas from Dependable, but now I'm looking for advice on St. John rental companies you guys have dealt with and recommend. There are only a few that have websites, so how do I compare pricing without making a bunch of calls? Relatively speaking, are we talking about $10-$20 difference for a 2-week rental? Who has the newest vehicles and offers the best service? Thanks.

I can only tell you my personal experience with L&L (www.bookajeep.com) was exemplary. We made our reservation online. Upon arrival we were met at the ferry, filled out the paperwork on the hood of the new red Vitara and were off.
Literally every single time Levi or Alvin of L&L saw us, they'd call out to say hello or check to see if everything was ok.
At one point we locked ourselves out of the Vitara at Cinnamon Bay. We called the office and Levi came out to rescue us within 30 minutes. At that point I understood the wisdom of those who advised against renting on St Thomas and taking the car ferry. How long would it have taken a St Thomas rental agency to get to us out at Cinnamon Bay? What would we have done?
When we left, they again met us at the dock, looked the Vitara over and we were on our way home. From what I've seen rental rates vary little between the different St John agencies. Unless I someday have a different experience, I will continue to rent from L&L.

Mary..

Boy, that was a fast response! Thank you very much for your input on L&L. I'll check them out further. Can't wait to explore the island! Any suggestions as to what not to miss? Also, any suggestions where to go snorkeling and the best places to rent equipment? Thanks again.

Hello Desgraziato,

www.conradcars.com
www.courtesycarrental.com/

Islander...

You are the true master of this board...a virtual encyclopedia of information. I don't know how you make the time to help all of us "main-landers", but I'm sure glad you're there. Thank you for saving me a ton of phone calls. I'll check them out for pricing and availability for this August. I assume you agree it makes more sense to ferry over from St Thomas and rent on St. John. Are you a snorkel person? If so, what beaches should we make sure to visit? I've heard the snorkeling is better by you than in Maui, and we loved snorkeling in Maui. Thanks again for taking the time... D.

Hello D.

You are very welcome, glad the board and site are useful to you - I hope you will post a review of your trip when you return so others can benefit in their own travel planning from your opinions and suggestions.

Yes I do think it makes sense if you are staying on St. John to rent a car on St. John to avoid the misc. things that could/might come up like locking your keys in the car, losing the keys, getting a flat tire, getting into a fender bender, a perk - being able to use the agencies parking area in Cruz Bay.

Yes I am a snorkel person - LOL. On St. John I would say check out the regular suggested ones Trunk Bay and Cinnamon Bay. Then try: Waterlemon Cay (short hike), Lameshur Bay, Salt Pond Bay (short hike). There are other sites too.

Have a great time.

Grinder,
I have rented 4 wheel drive cars from "coolbreeze.com" on saint john, Its close to the ferry, walking distance, and found them to be the cheapest on saint john. I still have their phone number in my cell phone. Its 340-776-6588 and there website is above. Good luck and enjoy your stay at saint john. Where are you staying? We stayed at the eco concordia tents on the other side of the island, (an absolutely awesome place to stay, it you don't mind roughin it, slightly, camping to be more exact) near salt pond (excellent) for snorkleing, Early in the morning about 7am you can catch the beauty of the sea turtles swimming. Its the best place to snorkle. You do have somewhat of a walk once you park your car, so take plenty of water. Going down the hill TO snorkle is okay, its the walk back up the hill that gets to ya...LOL

Good luck.

Linda

I just reserved a jeep through Conrad Car Rental and so far I have been impressed - online reservations (5% savings if booked online for rentals June-Oct) and a confirmation the next day. They seem very professional and have been in business for 30 yrs (at least according to their website). I have done alot of research online and most jeep rental agencies seem to be extremely similar - even rate wise.
