I love to try local beers when traveling... microbrewery type beers. It's fun to try different stuff and some of them are excellent. Are there any USVI beers... beers brewed in the VI? I've heard of Carib.... where is that brewed? I can't get it here in Canada. Any other caribbean brewed beers available on STJ?

Red Stripe is Jamaican.
Carib is from Trinidad and Tobago.

(Balashi is from Aruba, Wadadli is from Antigua, Banks is from Barbados, Stingray is from the Cayman Islands, Kubuli is from Dominica...)

A book you may find interesting:

Red Stripe is from Jamaica mon. Love the Red Stripe Lite, which you can only get in Jamaica - -maybe you can get in USVI. Definitely not US. I've checked many times.

Yes, you can get Red Stripe on STJ for sure. Landlocked, You need to move to sunny (hahaha) New England, we buy Red Stripe right up the street at a liquor store in Foxboro, Mass, no problem.

Red Stripe is available just about anywhere, even in Carbondale, Illinois! I also like to experiment with different kinds of beer. While I was in STJ I tried both Caribe and Presidente. Both beers were lighter lagers and (in my opinion) were ok for those who enjoy the "Bud Light" genre. I'd think they'd be great ice-cold on a beach. On the other hand, if you're looking for a fuller beer, and dind one there, tell me what it is!

I think Land was referencing the Red Strip "Lite" being only in Jamaica.

I'm with you, Canoe - Caribe and Presidente are both light (to me)...and so is Corona.

I just go for the Heinekens on STT (much cheaper than in the states)...or sometimes I get a Guiness (they are sold individually at Burrito Bay)

Hey, us New Englands make great beer- just try Buzzards Bay Brewery beers- fantastic for those of us who prefer ales. Just keep buyin' the Guiness in cans however- keeps my husband's company in business (their nitrogen process makes the beer foam when you pour it from the can which means we can pay the college bills.

Okay, I've got a few beers to try when there now.

dntw8up: that looks like a geat book... I might have to get it.

KSq Domer: Do you know where on St. John the VI Pale Ale is available... I'm not a real big fan of pale ales, but I'd HAVE to have one just because I love STJ so much. I'd also need to bring one home just as a souvenir too. Has anyone had one?? Do they make any other beers? Enquiring minds want to know!!

Karrie: One of my fav beers is Sam Adams Cherry Wheat... that's from Boston, isn't it?

I was in St John and tried Caribe. I liked it a lot and thought it was a lot like Corona, but a little stronger. They serve it with a lime. Does anyone know if Caribe is available in the US?

I also tried a Virgin Island Ale, or Blackbeard Ale, while I was there. I discovered that it was brewed in Portland Maine. About 50 miles from my home.

oh yes, indeed Crickett, we are very proud of our Sam Adams line! I may not care about sports but I do know my local brews- we have dozens of small breweries but Sam Adams seasonals are very popular.

I'm pretty sure we can get Caribe in Foxboro, Mass so I would think somebody in Maine, maybe Portland, would carry it? We can get Virgin Island Ale which was good stuff too.

On our last day in the VI's, I'd just said hi to Marty and was sitting in front of a store in St. Thomas watching our carry-ons while my wife shopped inside. While I was sitting there, the local UPS (or whatever the local parcel-delivery service is called) driver pulled up and unloaded several boxes from his truck, put them on a hand cart and delivered them to the store. The boxes were all from St. Louis, Missouri. I had to chuckle. Imagine the irony had we travelled 2,000 miles to the Virgin Islands only to purchase something that had ALSO travelled the SAME 2,000 miles!

And Bluwater, you and me both! I'm not much of a "light lager" fan, so I got a case of Heineken at the Starfish, and it WAS less expensive than I could buy it in Illinois. I stopped at the "Quiet Mon" pub one afternoon and they had a couple ales on tap. The nice thing about beer is that there's something for everyone!

Obviously these are not local. You can get Sierra Nevada Pale Ale & Sam Adams on STJ. You can get these & I've seen Red Hook ESB on STX. Plus a few of the Brit beers.

Virgin Island's Pale Ale is very mango-y. Also try Foxy's brew. It's from Jost, but close enough, yeah?

You have to try the Virgin Islands Pale Ale! 3 local guys from St. John came up with the recipe. The logistics were to great to brew and bottle on St. John, so they have it brewed somewhere on the East coast, then shipped down. I met one of the three guys a couple of weeks ago when I was there. I tried to bring a case home but the two places I checked were both out.
Enjoy!

Is Foxy's brew available on STJ or only at Foxy's?

I'm sorry, I like beer as well but doesn't all of this get in the way of enjoying a true VI local...Cruzan?

LOL Chris... Oh I will be doing my fair share of cruzan, but I know I'll want a beer or 2 throughout the week too.
