I will be arrivng in St. Thomas by cruise ship on a Tuesday. The two beaches I am inquiring about is Sapphire Beach and Maegan's Bay Beach. My husband and I like soft sand beaches with crystal clear water and no undertow or large waves.

We also would need changing facilities, bathroom and a bar/restaurant. Can you recommend which beach would be the best choice for us. Also a view would be nice!

Thanks

Rosemary

Hello Rosemary,

I'd vote for Magens Bay based on your wants. Magens is a bigger beach then Sapphire. It doesn't have light, soft sand... but neither does Sapphire. Sapphire has some small pebbles on one side of the bay... Magens is all sand. Magens is usually very very calm. Sapphire often has a little lapping of waves. Magens deepens very gradually. Magens has changing facilties. They both have bathrooms and bar/restaurant. (Magens is popular with cruise passengers, so if you are visiting during season (Nov-May) it will be busy.)

Megans is the calmer of the two--not even a ripple. They have a snack bar and changing facilities for public use.

Sapphire has more of a ripple (not undertow, not really waves, but a rougher surf feeling). Sapphire beach sits right in front of a resort (with beach front rooms), so there really aren't public changing facilities because it's a hotel beach. Sapphire has a pool grill and a restaurant. The restaurant is normally closed during the middle of the day. The pool grill serves salads, burgers, sandwiches, fish, etc...and drinks (alcoholic and non).

IMHO, the view is better at Sapphire because you can look over to St. John and some cays. However, Megans also has a lovely view.

Megans is a larger beach (it's longer), so there's more room for people to stretch out. Sapphire can quickly feel crowded when the ships are in.

Islander-

Our posts overlapped (I didn't see yours when I posted). Sorry for repeating what you've said.

And, obviously, I AGREE! 😉
