Is there any way to get to the less traveled to beaches on the west end of the island? I know there are not many paved roads to these beaches.

Botany Bay can only be reached by boat, the are other beaches, but most not good for swimming! Fortuna, take first left off main road and keep turning down. This turn off is the first once you get in to Fortuna where there are houses on both sides of the road. Rocky.
Bourdoix (sp, don't have time to look for correct spelling)- I used to go down there often....long windy dirt road, but don't go anymore as there are Pit Bulls being bred and ran into them twice, couldn't even get out the car! If you dare, again this beach is not a swimming beach, but cool to go to. There is an old Great House up on the hill. This is a right turn ON a curve, so you are really going straight off the road, just past a old ruin that is on the main drag.
Stumpy- not a real pretty beach, but you can go in the water. The sand is darker and very corse, camped out there once, but many years ago! The lower part of the road required 4wd, not sure how it is now. This is a right hand turn (just before road to Bordoix (sp), just before and at the ruins. These roads are not marked.
Hope this helps! 🙂

My opinion - If you're a tourist, there are plenty of beautiful beaches that are uncrowded and more accessible. These beaches sound like they are hard to get to and might be trouble if you did get to them.

For West or Northward facing beaches on all these islands, be sure keep a keen eye on the North Swell being delivered by storms in the North Atlantic--go to www.weathercarib.com for all the weather reporting...big swell can be very treacherous, but beautiful when viewed from a safe point on land. Rip currents are very real....just a word of warning...have a good time...
