Does anyone know if they have public BBQ grills at Magen's Bay or do you have to bring your own?
Hello IAMolly,
If you rent a shed there is a grill with the shed. The sheds are fairly big, intended for parties and gatherings. You have to apply for one at minimum a week before but there are only a few so if you know you want one its best to apply in advance. Its $100 for a shed rental.
There aren't any free standing grills aside from those with the sheds. You can bring your own grill. There are picnic tables along the beach so you can set your grill up next to one, put the chips and stuff on the table, of course the cooler of drinks... and you are good to go! 😉 Have fun!

Thanks Islander,
Maybe it's time that I stop by Home Depot and invest in one of those portable "Outback" grills. Mine is a little too bulky to fit in a car.
If you are going to rent a covered area you better try it early. If not you can bring a grill, but not on the beach.

Thanks for the info everyone but it's just a small group and a pavillion and a $100 fee would be a little overkill. Nice to know in case we would like to host a party some day. I've seen some beautiful beach side weddings with the receptions held there. That would be a great deal for anyone looking to get married on island. Maybe I shouldn't say this but we crashed a wedding once there.
Molly, if you track left to the very far end of the beach road, it's never been unusual to find a private BBQ going there and in years past there were pig roasts there on holidays. I saw ashes there just the other day (and a left-behind small grill- fie upon the litterers!) so that more remote spot is obviously still being used. As far as weddings are concerned, they are indeed beautiful but there is a charge for them too.
Kudos to the Magens Bay Authority for being the ONLY government agency which has NEVER asked for government funding and has managed to maintain fiscal responsibility while at the same time preserving an incredibly beautiful bay, a nature trail and a haven for wildlife along with all the amenities which visitors seek.
Further kudos for having such insight to hire Hubert Brumant as their Executive Director after John Jowers retired. It was a tough spot to fill but the Board made such a good decision in hiring Hubert who was for many years the Shelter Manager for the Humane Society of St Thomas.
The MBA now also has oversight of Lindqvist Beach (Smith Bay Park) since it's acquisition by the Government of the Virgin Islands and its continued development of that site will no doubt further prove that even a USVI government agency can not only function but can continue to improve its facilities without seeking handouts and draining the coffers.
Apologies for segueing off so I'll stop before I get totally boring! Cheers!
